Calls from Directv about software and signal updates
On Thanksgiving, my parents are being repeatedly and aggressively called about needing software updates for their Directv units from a foreign call center. I believe this is a scam to gain information from my parents, but to make sure, can we have verification on if there is a change needed for the hardware. A change in the satellite is a reason given for this change.

Most likely a scam.
But DirecTV is phasing out older standard definition only equipment. What DVR/Receiver models do your parents have?

100% scam updates are done via satellite well known scam
While AT&T employees do look at forum posts from time to time, we are here to represent the forum with our experiences as customers and do not represent AT&T in any official capacity with our responses and do so on our own time unpaid and off the clock. As employees we are not rewarded nor compensated to participate in these forums This forum is comprised of regular customers to communicate with other customers to offer advice and share experiences same as any other user Although there is a small team of customer care specialists that monitor the forums the sheer volume of posts are simply too many posts for these agents to respond to each one of them.

h44/100 for the main unit - it does the hi def signal through the HDMI cabling.

Calls about a "software" update are a scam. They are trying to use a real DirecTV situation to con people to fall for their scheme.
DirecTV is shutting down the MPEG-2/SD-only feeds which requires many people to swap their equipment.
The H44 is the Genie Lite, which is MPEG-4/SD and HD capable, and uses the new SWM setup exclusively. So that says they have nothing to replace. As long as they don't have a D or R model on a separate cabling and dish system (such as detached garage, RV, etc.) then there is nothing required to replace.
