Media streaming devices, such as Apple TV, roku, etc. are in full resolution. Networks are paid based on how many TVs are authorized on the service, so some networks do not allow Directv to stream them through the app to a full TV, but a mobile device only in smaller resolution. The networks that are ok with streaming to TV in addition to the live service have their own individual apps you can download and log in verifying which TV provider you have.

Also there is the issue that some people would use streaming option to give another household (friend/family) service instead of having their own account as they are supposed to.

So the difference is that the networks and TV providers want to make sure they are paid what has been determined for the service instead of allowing work arounds.

directv  chose to keep minis off the homeowner network to avoid congestion

with the ability for 7 minis at one time it would create alot of traffic

did you look into rvu?

and remember directv is a satellite tv company.

thats their focus.

you can assume many customer do not have broadband and therefore may not have a home network

yes we exist.  we just use our cell phone for internet

Ok so to sum it all up. No you can NOT use AppleTV with the Directv Satellite service. We could argue as to why it should be back and forth all day and night but the end of the day it's not going to change. It is the way it is. If you want to use AppleTV, Roku, firestick or any other 3rd party device and you wish to stay within the AT&T family Directv Now is your only option.

Hi @Ctclindley,

Thank you for the post! The DIRECTV app cannot be downloaded to Apple TV.

However, our new streaming, over-the-top service DIRECTV NOW app can be downloaded to Apple TV. Here is more information on DIRECTV NOW.

How pathetically stupid. To watch directv on my apple tv. I have to pay for an additional service. But I can watch it on my phone/laptop without? No wonder cable cutting is becoming more and more popular. Greedy little people

It is the channels that require that you pay for additional TVs and allowing you to circumvent this will cost them money so the DTV Mobile DVR app is only for mobile devices.

@molonlabe

AT&T has three separate tv services: Uverse, DirectvNOW, and Directv (the traditional satellite service). The Directv app is just a mobile perk for the satellite service, not to get around paying for an authorized tv. If you want dedicated streaming to a tv, then you go with DirectvNOW.

Networks do not want people getting around for paying for each tv. They allow different agreements for streaming service (like DirectvNOW, Netflix, Hulu, etc.) and a regular TV provider (Directv, Cox, Dish, etc.).

Channel, show owners, and the tv providers they allow to rebroadcast them want to paid well for their service. Customers want everything under the sun for little to no cost. So "Greedy little people" really is the kettle calling the pot.

Why would you want to watch on an Apple TV other than trying to watch on a TV without paying for a receiver? I too have an Apple TV, the TV it is connected to also has a directv DVR. No need to use Apple TV.

I pay for direct tv but want to watch it outside on my tv by the pool.  I don't need another receiver nor would I be able to wire it.  Why shouldn't I be able to get the service that i pay for over the air.  It is stupid.  I used to be able to do this with the Uverse app on Fire, but now that I switched to Direct TV i am screwed.  Same gang company.  I guess I need another apple TV so I can log into the Driect TV App on my Ipad/phone and then mirror my screen.  Just stupid.

Sorry, not sure what you are talking about.  It really shouldn't be this difficult, right?  Other tv providers allow their customers to access their services via apps on Fire and Roku?  Someone who pays a heck of a lot less (Direct TV now) has better access than I do and I pay for the highest tier product DTV offers?  Cable providers offer this service.......why not DTV?

Wow I just googled all that hardware id need to solve a problem.  thanks for the ideas to solve.   DTV could easily fix this if they just offered apps for their paying customers like they do for cord cutters.  Its like DTV is begging me to cut their cord and go to a much lower priced option.........insanity.  Just offer the apps and I'll keep paying the $185/month.

Actually no. It isn't. Because if I'm already paying close to TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS a month then I want to be able to watch tv how I want. If I want to watch through my Apple TV instead of switching back to my receiver then that's what I want to do.

They want their $7 a month for their receivers. Nothing to do with screens. It is just Them squeezing money out.

Maybe I have a tv in my kids playroom that rarely ever gets used and I don't need a receiver to pay for every damm month when I could have an Apple TV, Roku or something like that.

No. DirecTV wants that $7. It has nothing to do with screens. They can see how I accessed their service and from where any ways.

And what are you even rambling about networks and TVs? Standard basic cable doesn't do that. Also, all those networks have apps on the appletv and I can sign in using DirecTV login and watch content. So they are allowing it, DirecTV isn't.

You are correct sir!  It's a joke how they treat their highest paying customers.  It's DTV not allowing it.  Just allow your regular app on Fire, Roku, and Apple TV, or give customer like me a login to DTV NOW so I can use the app.......that would solve it quick.
