Alexa Directv Skill will not turn on set top box.

In the living room:  Samsung 4KHDTV, 4K set top box C61K-700; internet hard wired, AT&T Alexa skill included to Echo Dot.  In the bedroom Samsung HDTV- Directv set top box HR54/200 box; AT&T Alexa skill included to Echo Spot.

Alexa Skill works flawless including shutting the boxes OFF.  Why does it NOT turn ON the Directv set top boxes?   I notice when Alexa shuts off the box there are no indication lights on the front panel. Wonder if there is a standby mode not activated. I can't find the menu options to control the box behavior.   Anyone have this problem?  Fix?

Hello @bwberm

Happy to help. Have you performed any troubleshooting on your TV or the Alexa device or reached out to Amazon to make sure the issue isn't with the device?

Yes I did perform troubleshooting. I deleted the skill and reinstalled and did a reboot of the boxes. The Alexa skill will change the channels and shut off the box and TV but won’t turn them on. Nothing I can do will make the Directv set top box turn on. Alexa has no problem turning it on replying OK but it does not turn on.

I’ve exhausted all troubleshooting techniques so far without having the skill turn on the box. Maybe the box does not go into a “standby mode” when the Alexa off command is applied. The command to turn on is sent to a cold off hardware that doesn’t receive. We can’t be the only two people that has this issue.

That's a good point, "DEAD" receiver. I just installed second Dot in bedroom. Same thing; changes channels, turn "OFF", but will not turn "ON".

I'm having the same problem.  Everything seems to work except the “on” function.  Not any use if it can't turn my TV on.

As far as I know, the DTV boxes only have an “on” and “standby” mode. To completely power off the box you have to unplug it.

I realize that that doesn’t fix your issue, but it rules out one potential cause.

Taking that in consideration means the Alexa Directv skill has a software programming error. I deleted the skill and downloaded a few times without any change. Maybe certain model set top boxes have the NO Turn on glitch. Have to wait until AT&T troubleshoots and sends out the fix. Hope they are reading the posts..

I might as well chime in too.  I have an HR54-200,  two C61K-700 clients and an Echo Plus (2nd Gen).  When I enabled the DTV skill, Alexa immediately detected all three of my DTV boxes.  As a test, I chose one of the clients and it seemed to pair perfectly.  However, like the others here, I found that although I was able to change channels and turn off the DTV client,  I couldn't turn it on. So, I deleted the devices, removed and re-added the DTV skill and tried again ... this time using the other C61K client.   Same result ... changes channels, turns off, but it won't turn on the box.   Again, I removed the devices and the skill and reinstalled, this time I tried having Alexa control the HR54.  Surprisingly, that worked ... Alexa has full control *including* turning on the box.  I've since tried again with both clients (the one I really want to control is the client in my bedroom).  The story is pretty consistent.   Alexa will control any one of my three DTV boxes, but it will turn on only the HR54, not the clients.   Just FYI.

Excellent news! I will make the adjustments to my HR54 set top box and post my results!

i will also try to control DTV main genie box, but that is not the box i want alexa to control. it seems the client end of this skill needs some work. I hope ATT/DTV & AMAZON are listening (reading)...

interesting...

Alexa turned "ON" DTV HR44 box, AND that box is in my basement!! Alexa is one floor up in the living room.

So, why can't she turn on the mini client that is less than 5 feet away from her??

What finally worked for me was changing the device name in the Alexa app of the set top box to simply "TV", or "Living Room TV". Now when I say "Alexa, turn on TV" or "Alexa, turn on living room TV", it works and turns on both the set top and connected TV.
