It is possible the boxes aren't returnable anymore. What are the model numbers?

No this post is not private.  AFAIK the H44 is not returnable but an HR44 was made non returnable this year but may still be taken by UPS/FedEx.

The H44-100 was returnable earlier this year. But that may have changed as they seemed to be prioritizing their latest (though not greatest) system. The post shows edited a month ago and still lists that model, so would indicate still returnable (though is by an employee off the clock).

Returnable model guidance

If you are over 10 miles away from a participating shipper, then you call DirecTV to use the old process of shipping you a prepaid return kit. If you don't get that return kit, or shipper doesn't accept box, then hold onto your Genie Lite for a couple months to make sure you do not get charged a Non Return Fee (NRF) before recycling it. If you do end up recycling it, remove access card and dispose of securely like a credit card.

Go to a FedEx or UPS location with your account #. No need to bring a box or label, the equipment will be boxed it up & shipped out at no charge. The process takes less than 5 minutes.

I have received 5 letters asking me to take to ups or fedex, I have called every time and told the person that there is no ups or fedex office where I live. The closest one is 50 miles. What to do next, there is a post office here.

If over 10 miles away from a participating FedEx/UPS location, then you must call DirecTV to use the old process. They ship you by FedEx a prepaid return kit to your physical service address. You then send it back, which should be by regular mail (USPS, not UPS).
