How to close DirecTV account?

I've made multiple phone calls today lasting a total of 2-1/2 hours trying to close my account. Multiple calls due to being disconnected, on hold for up to 25 minutes, or being connected to someone with such a heavy accent and poor phone reception I could not understand her. Eventually I made it from Customer Service to an agent, then to the Loyalty Department, and finally to a VIP agent, who said I needed to contact Customer Service to close my account! Hello? Does anyone know how to get an account closed?

It shouldn't be that hard. Hopefully you're calling the correct phone number: 1 (Phone number hidden).

Say "cancel" at the voice prompt and you'll connect with a specialist. That's the only way to close your DirecTV account. Be sure to ask about equipment returns and any early contract termination fees.

I agree it shouldn't be that hard. That why I was so frustrated all afternoon. Thanks for your reply. I will try saying "cancel" and see what happens.

Call DirecTV's official customer support number and when you get the voice system say "cancel" as that should route you directly.

Be prepared for offers to retain your business, as that is required of them. If they don't work for you, politely decline and continue with cancellation.

Be aware that no matter what day within your service month you cancel, you are still paying for the full bill. Cancellations as of a year ago do not prorate for any unused days in your bill month.

If you have any returnable boxes, take them to a FedEx or UPS store that participates in the free return program. Just get receipt showing they took possession. If over 10 miles from a shipper, then DirecTV should use the old process of sending you a prepaid return kit. What are the models of each box you have?

Leave the mounting plate attached to the roof to prevent leaks until you replace the roof.

I just went through the process of closing my account about 10 days ago. My account was paid up to the next billing statement, the end of my 2 year agreement. Told the "retention" guy to close my account at the end of my 2 year agreement. He said his system was popping up with something saying I was terminating early and was to be charged a $10 termination fee. He supposedly checked with his supv and came back saying everything was fine and that I would not be charged. I would hope not since I was already paid up to the contract end and stated to him that service was to stop at the end of the agreement.

So tonight I get a an email from these crooks saying I'm being billed the early termination fee. So off to the "office of the president" in the morning, again. And stopping my credit card from paying that charge.

Another issue is that the "retainer" said that I would be getting a box for shipping the receiver, etc. The next day I get an email stating not to worry about returning the electronics, do a recycle electronics process via UPS, with a link for getting a UPS label. So which is it? Haven't received a shipping box yet.

One thing I've started doing is recording all of my conversations with any business. Has come in handy several times over the years, especially in dealing with companies like directv. As soon as I get this crap cleared up, directv never again.

Only the HR44/54 Genie and the HS17 Genie2 and any C41/51/61 mini and the H25 are returnable and you take them to a UPS/FedEx store with your account info and keep the receipt.

The cancellation policy that no longer prorates changed effective January 2019, with the notice emailed to all us customers in November 2018.

Receiving dish and cabling upon install are part of the property, you now own them. If you have a wireless Cinema Connection Kit (CCK) or wireless video bridge (WVB), these are accessories you own as well.

All that might be returnable are any receiver/client boxes, depending on the models. All that should be returnable now are 2nd gen Genie (HR44) and up, 2nd gen Mini Genie Client (C41) and up, Genie-2 (HS17) server tower, and the H25.
