How do you remove a channel?

Hello,

The DirecTV bill keeps going up and up and up. I just got notice of my next bill and it seems like it’s $7 more a month for the same thing. I want to trim the fat so one very low hanging fruit is the movies extra pack which is $4.99. How can I remove this package? I tried with the my At&T iPhone app and also the website and if I go to manage my DirecTV package it shows an error that they hit a snag MS_UNI_UPDI_BE_008.

The live chat is useless because whenever I have time to do this it always says that cancelation specialist are not available.

Why is is so difficult to remove stuff to keep the bill down? I watch 1 channel (mtv live - which has nothing to do with movies), so removing this package is not a huge loss.

You cannot remove an individual channel. The networks package the channels they own to the TV providers, which in turn must package them to us customers.

To reduce the package, or remove an optional pack (such as the Movies Extra Pack), you must call DirecTV. This is because they want a live agent to review the account with you for anything that lowers their revenue.

The Movies Extra Pack used to be call the HD Extra Pack (as it was from the early days of HD service). Assumedly the name was updated as many people consider HD basic service now.

As for the next bill seeming $7 more, it probably is. The annual price adjustment just hit, per the increasing costs from the networks. If you compare your last bill to the current one you will see exactly what changed. Here is a copy of the notice they sent us customers last month, as they have done the last few years.

@Juniper

Thanks. The yearly price increases are unsustainable. I need to remove this one package to at least get close to where I was before.

Back in the DirecTV days it was easy. Online you just clicked an X next to the package and submit. I would X off (than HD Xtra) submit and come back in and there was an offer to add it free for 3 months. AT&T quickly got rid of that, and most recently removed the ability for me to even manage packages online. I can’t even view packages in the app nor the website.

If they keep upping prices every month, it’s time to get android TV’s or fire sticks. My neighbor has an app and a $25 a month IPTV provider and gets 1000’s of channels from all over the world. Seems grey market to me, but there are other big names out there too like Hulu and YouTube TV too. There was a big complaint thread about our local cable company on both Facebook and NextDoor, (mostly complaining about price).

It is not prices going up every month. It is a once a year price adjustment. Unfortunately to not do so would unsustainable. As networks go up, then TV providers have to do so as well so they don't end up operating at a loss. This was happening well before AT&T acquired DirecTV. In fact this is a situation all TV providers (satellite, cable, streaming) face. But what can be done to stop the networks from raising their costs to the TV providers in the first place?

Removing the Movies (HD) Extra Pack and getting the 3 month free trial was a loophole in the system left for too long. That should have only applied when first adding it, or perhaps as a save offer for the pack but not on a regular basis. But beyond that, too many people had service with discounts that were too high or for too long that was not sustainable. So that is why there CEO has reeled in discounts so that they don't have subscribers operating at a loss. Discounts are supposed to be a temporary perk, but there are those out there that think they are always entitled to them.

Streaming services have seen price increases as well. It is wondered how long until they catch up to traditional TV providers in cost. But streaming does rely on less equipment as they are dependent on your internet provider, instead of maintaining their own infrastructure, a business way to pass on cost and upkeep. Certainly go where suits you the best. Many of us do not have good enough internet, or no internet at all, to support streaming services on top of everything else that wants to use the internet. I prefer having TV and internet separate, so if one goes down then the other still works. If both are down, then there is probably something bigger to worry about.
