AT&T Wi-Fi Calling

Wi-Fi Calling.png

 Talk and Text in More Places!

 Hello Community!

We pride ourselves in being able to deliver a blazing fast network across the United States, along with partnerships across the globe!  This allows us to have coverage in most areas where you need and want service.

We all have run into those areas where we don’t have the bars we need though.  To help keep you connected, AT&T has introduced Wi-Fi Calling!  In the thread below we will list all available devices that support Wi-Fi calling.

This will be a living document, and will be updated with future releases as well.

@kitnbob Good to hear.  What device, and is it an ATT-branded model?

The sort of "acid test" is to turn on Airplane mode, turn WiFi back on (leaving it in Airplane mode), and then see if you can make a call (this makes the call with all other radios, except WiFi, disabled).  Does this work?

@pgrey

I have a LG K20 That I bought at the AT&T store

I have been turning ON Airplane mode as soon as I get home to preserve battery and also to avoid notifications.

Wi-Fi calling seems to work OK in airplane mode.

Voice mail gets funny in Airplane mode.

@pgrey

perhaps I should start a new topic for this, but

Voice mail gets funny in Airplane mode there is a number listed in Networks & Internet>Call>Voicemail>Setup that works while in Airplane mode and Wi-Fi Calling enabled.

The shortcut I am aware of "pressing and holding 1 on the dial pad" works in Airplane mode also.

When service is available, I can dial my cell number to access voice mail.

Yes it works. I can send AND receive calls in Airplane mode.

and out of curiosity, now that you asked, I turned OFF Airplane mode and still can make and receive calls with no Service.

I have been using Wi-Fi in Airplane mode for about a year now. My battery lasts a LOT longer 🙂

@kitnbob Yeah, the cell radio is pretty battery-intensive, particularly if the signal is weak (it's horrible on the battery if there's no signal), this is true for pretty much true across the board/time.

Yep, turning Airplane mode off, with no signal (but a decent WiFi connection), is more the "general use case" for WiFiC, it was originally intended to "cover poor/non-existent service areas", and has morphed into a whole host of other cool stuff, like out-of-country calling, that's more or less free (as long as you're really careful, no cell radio enabled, EVER, while doing this).

The part where you're using the "1" key is the same as it would be over standard-cell, except that the call is routed over WiFiC, it's nifty that it all works, but technically not much different than calling the pizza place down the street(from WiFiC) ;-]

On the "messaging gets funny", yeah, it'd be better if you split this off, into another topic, since this one is more about "getting it working".

If you paste a link, to the new thread/topic, here, it'll transition nicely (for anyone else finding this part of it, and wondering what happened, to this part).  I can add this too, if you're not familiar, after you start the other, as long as you mention me, so I can find it;-]

Hello, I have a Sonim XP8, and can't find the Wi-Fi calling option. It is very important to me because where I live AT&T coverage is low. What can I do??

You think ATT could make Wireless calling work for all ATT Branded Phones.  I have an ATT Branded Blackberry Keyone Android and it does not support wireless calling.

Mainly because ATT has decided not to offer that feature on the phone they sold me.

ATT is not a good customer service company, too big, too inflexible, to offer good support.

We do a lot a lot of business with them, our phones, Direct TV, and 4 LAN lines.

Actually your problem was choice of phone..  The keyone was rushed out because ATT thought that they could make more off the phone.  That plan did not include wifi calling.  Then when the Keyone flopped for the most part ATT almost dropped all support on it.  I blame TCL for not getting certification for it to work.
