4G Phone on 5G Unlimited Plan

I have a 4G phone.  I am going to upgrade to a 5G one soon.  If I upgrade my wireless 4G plan to an Unlimited Starter 5G one to get an $800 trade-in on my old phone, can I  use my 4G one on it until I get my new 5G phone.  I know I definitely will not get any 5G benefits on the old 4G phone.  I just want to be able to use the old phone on Unlimited 5G until I get the new one.  In essence, upgrade to Unlimited Starter plan, order 5G phone, use 4G phone on Unlimited plan until 5G arrives, send in 4G phone for trade-in credit.

Or should I order the 5G phone and then upgrade my plan to 5G?

That's a great question, @Shotze

You can switch to the Unlimited Starter plan before upgrading to your 5G device. You're not required to have a 5G phone to be on either of our plans, you just won't get 5G access until you're using a compatible device and in a 5G coverage zone

Here's how to switch plans:

  1. Go to Change my plan to see your current plan and our other plans.
  2. Scroll through our other plans. Select Compare plans to get a side-by-side view.
  3. Compare plans and decide which one you want.
    • Choose Select & review and follow the prompts to switch plans.
