Why does a MIMEMultipart email introduce a trailing newline when viewed as text message?

The following MIMEMultipart/mixed email message was sent from a gmail account to an iOS recipient via mms.att.net. The message includes a MIMEText subpart and a MIMEImage attachment. Why does the text bubble include a trailing newline?

The email contents:

The Message screenshot shows an extra newline at the end of the text bubble.

This renders correctly when sending only a single subpart, either MIMEText or MIMEImage. This appears to be related to how Messages handle MIMEMultipart/mixed types, or due to a bug introduced in the MMS gateway. The recipient is iOS 16.3.1.

Hey there, jebyrne. Let's look into why there is an extra space after the text that you sent from your computer.

While this can typically be an error of some sort when sending an image or even an emoji, you will want to make sure that you're not hitting the space bar or enter key by mistake.

What happens is that when sending an image with email-to-text there are times when that image won't load correctly on your side, so you're seeing a blank.

Let us know if you require additional help.
