Unlimited Plus Data Speed

I grandfathered the old unlimited data plan and I currently cannot add additional lines to my plan so I would have to switch to a new plan. My concern is the data speeds of the Unlimited Plus and Choice. The Choice plan indicates the max speed of 3Mbps but under Unlimited Plus it only says "Our fastest speeds" which is suspicious. So I went ahead and chatted with ATT customer serviced and I was told that the Unlimited Plus download/upload speeds are 5-12Mbps and 3-10Mbps relatively. I did a Speedtest app on my grandfathered data plan and I'm getting 60Mbps download and 18Mbps upload speeds! What a HUUUUUGE difference! My brother currently has the Unlimited Choice plan and his speeds are about 3Mbps download/upload.....Pretty weak if you ask me! So I guess my question is, does anyone have the Unlimited Plus data and use the Speedtest app to measure the actual data speed? I'm curious if it's somewhere around 5-12Mbps as I was told. Thanks in advance!

This is messy but look over the stated data rates.  As an aside, would it make any sense to reference video and streaming data without up and download speeds.  I believe you insulted my intelligence on a couple of points and I simply wanted to let you know.  I apologize and start fresh.

Speed Tiers
Internet speed claims represent maximum network service capability speeds. Actual customer speeds may vary and are not guaranteed. Actual speeds vary based on factors including site traffic, content provider server capacity, internal network management factors, device capabilities and the use of other AT&T services. I think you sent this to the wrong person.....yes i complained about data slow downs for my son but this is all way over my head.  I think you want one of the other people who were actually measuring speeds 🙂

I also was grandfathered with the very old unlimited data plan that I refused to give up.....I had two lines.  My problem was my youngest son was not under the grandfathered.  They finally got me to accept the new "unlimited" plan with the hook of the free hot spots.....we thought this was incredible until now 10 days later and my older son who is a gamer used up his 22g of

"optimal speed" and now he is at a snails paced can do nothing.......is this how its supposed to go?

Your older son was on the old unlimited plan? That old unlimited plan has the same 22GB restriction.

I'm not sure why it would be slowing down consistently now unless something is making his local tower overly congested.  Even when they know they're being slowed down, many say it's not unbearably slow. Even when I see it's slow when I'm over 22GB, I'm not sure if it's just being slow at that moment or if I'm I'm intentionally begin bumped.

I guess if he used the 10GB hotspot/tethering, it might have gotten them to the 22GG when they normally didn't. But "snails pace" is what the hotspot should drop to when exceed, not necessarily regular phone access.

@Missyme4   This is no different that the old plan, which was also reprioritized at 22 gigs.   Neither plan is throttled, except the tethering after 10 gigs.  He is not slowed to a snails pace, his line is reprioritized, which means when towers are congested, speeds may be slower.

Gaming on cellular data has never been, will never be a good choice, it requires home internet services.

@3f3f3f   Are you posting about wireless or home internet?

You wrote about the Unlimited plus plan, (post 6). which is wireless for cell phones, not home internet.  There are no speed tiers on wireless.

The entirety of post 12 is about home internet and completely out of place in the cellular forum.

Apples and oranges....

Go here, scroll down to the Quick Facts.   https://www.att.com/plans/unlimited-data-plans.html

There is no promised speeds.

I've seen some very rare stories of some overly congested areas that people slow down significantly at 22GB (constant super slowdowns). If they are getting to 22GB and they hadn't before (going higher because they have the tethering option now) that could be an issue.

To clarify everything on postpaid is "Our fastest speeds" except the CHOICE plan.

"Our fastest speeds" is not a consistent number, it's just whatever they can get you at that time.  Sometimes it's might be 5mbps, sometimes it's 90mbps.

This is from unlimited plus after I had use almost 45 gigs of data....  Now I will say I dont live in a area that is going to see a congested tower.

Incorrect. I "upgraded" to unlimited plus. It's horrible speeds. Was getting 40 on the grandfathered now I'm getting 5 if I'm lucky. Spent 2 hours on the phone trying to cancel my service and the call got disconnected. Called back and it says they're closed. GREAT USE OF MY TIME. I refuse to pay $40 more monthly than what I was paying for the same exact plan I had before. No one mentioned the downgrade in speed when switching to unlimited plus. These shady practices should be outlawed. It's all just a scam to increase your bill. At this point it's not even about the money. I'll pay twice the cost at any other company before I stay with AT&T after this stunt.

@GiovanniG

The goto another carrier...  As you can see from my speedtest I dont have slowdowns...  One of my kids used 75.5gb last month and seen a slowdown once on the way to a football game.

@GiovanniG  Why are you all over the forum, rather than telling ATT to fix it?   You have unlimited Plus, it is no different speed or priority wise from your old plan.

ATT has something wrong.  Make them fix it.
