SMS/MMS issues - at my wits end and ready to switch carriers

I am on an AT&T family plan with 4 members.

Starting the evening of May 3rd, Tuesday, I did not receive a MMS/SMS from my daughter.

Since then I have been unable to receive any MMS from anyone (within my family plan or outside).

I can receive SMS from individuals on AT&T, but on a hit or miss basis.

I cannot receive any SMS from any of various financial institutions, UPS tracking, USPS tracking, etc.  This is crucial for 2-factor authentication.

I do not receive any text responses when I dial an AT&T Star service code, or USSD codes, such as *225#

This behavior carries across 4 (FOUR) different cell phones - my current One Plus 7 Pro, a brand new OnePlus 9 Pro, my wife's OnePlus 7T, and a new (freebie) AT&T Radiant core.

My wife can put her SIM card in my cell phone and receive SMS & MMS without a problem. But if I put my SIM card in her phone I cannot receive MMS.

This behavior is definitely not hardware related, and appears to be related to my specific phone number somehow. No one else on my family plan has been affected.

I went to the AT&T store and got a new SIM card. No change. The manager tried everything, but gave up saying it was beyond their capabilities.

I spent almost 2 hours in an online chat with someone who took me through every step on their list, and had to open a ticket with back office support. 3 days later I received an e-mail yesterday stating, "We investigated your technical issue and were unable to find a problem."

You are my last hope, fellow Jedi. Otherwise, I'll be moving our family plan to another carrier.

Thank you for reading.

Sounds like you're free to find a new service provider.  Which would be my advice

As a last ditch effort, I got another SIM card from the AT&T store, but it did not make a difference.

So, switched to another provider, popped in the new SIM card, and all test messaging functionality has been restored. Sorry AT&T, you had your chance.

VERY SIMILAR ISSUE HERE!!!  I'm at MY WITS END TOO!!!!,  I'm ready to switch carriers and phones!  I haven't been able to sent or receive MMS since mid-March. I CAN send/receive SMS.  I have a OnePlus 9, which I just bought in Jan, so I'd still have network service in Feb.

I've spent hours and days on the phone with various AT&T employees.  One told me my phone is not and will not be on their network, I need to buy a phone from them, otherwise I am (Edited per community guidelines). Wow! I finally got a tech person with some knowledge, we tried various things, discovered the APN (Access Point Names) has been changed with AT&T but I cannot edit or add any APNs, on my OnePlus 9.  I edit and save it, but it does NOT save with the new settings.  I can delete one and add it back exactly the same, but not any different values.  I just got a SIM card in Jan.

I've been reading on OnePlus and other forums, and found others with other carriers (like Canada) have had this problem, and the communication between the carrier and the phone aren't matching, which is in the APN.  People changed SIMS, Flashed their phone, updated, all to no avail.  I also wrote on the OnePlus 9 forum, and haven't gotten any response.

This is crazy!!!  I pay all this $ and can't get MMS or a (Edited per community guidelines)ution.

I'm still on Android 11 and Oxygen OS 11.  I've read too many nightmares of Android 12 and Oxygen OS 12, and users regretting it, wanting to go back to V 11.  OnePlus first put out the upgrade in December, & it had so many bugs they had to backtrack.   I'll wait until its more stable.

AT&T says the APN Type is default, mms, supl, hipri,   MNC value is 410, but my phone says APN Type = default, mms, supl, fota   MNC = 280 and I cannot edit it.

I NEED HELP TOO, Please!

Zulu,

I am the OP. I also tried updating the APN but could not save the changes. Again, my wife has a OP 7T, and her SIM card would work in my phone.

It is just so odd that the texting functionality disappeared from one day to the next with no changes or system updates on my part.

Since I cannot live without texting, I ported our family plan over to T-mobile, with a slightly better price and features. T-Mobile has a web site where you can input your IMEI # to check compatibility.

Hello Zulu2525, we're here to help you send/receive your MMS messages.

Reset your network settings to refresh your connection. Resetting the network restores the default settings on the device. Be aware, Bluetooth pairing and Wi-Fi settings are deleted and will need to be re-added. You will not lose data like pictures, videos, or text.

    • Android: Settings icon > scroll to and select General management > select Reset > Reset network settings > Reset settings > select Reset to confirm.

Next, set up the access point name (APN) on your device to make sure you're getting a connection.

  1. Tap your Settings menu.
  2. Choose either Wireless & Networks, More Networks, or Connections.
  3. Tap Mobile Networks, then Access Point Names.
  4. Find and select the option to add a new APN.

Make sure your device has the most recent software updates to ensure you have the latest features.

Let us know if this helps, and thank you for reaching out to the AT&T Community Forums.

I am having the same problems but with an iPhone 11 Pro Max.  I have had people in the store look at it, gone through multiple levels of support, all for them to tell me that they didn't know what was wrong or how to fix it.  No other phone in our family has this issue with SMS/MMS messaging.

We're happy to provide you tips for a resolution to your SMS concerns @kayakriverrunner.

Once you've tried the steps provided above to reset your network and are still not able to receive/send SMS/MMS. Ensure that you have a sufficient data connection. Then try the following troubleshooting steps:

  • In your device’s settings app, reset your APN settings to default.
  • There may not be enough space on my device. Messages may not send or receive messages until more space is available. Visit our Device help page to see your devices manual user guide for step by step instructions
  • Follow our help page for messaging support. First select the Make and Model of your Device and then select Messaging and follow the prompts.
  • Make sure you have the most updated version of Messages.
  • If you have a SIM card, ensure that it is inserted properly.
  • Be sure messaging is on.
    • iOS devices: Go to Settings, then Message, and turn iMessage off and back on.
    • Android devices: Go to Settings, then Advanced Messaging, and turn Advanced Messaging off and back on.

If you still have trouble sending or getting text messages. Use our Message tool to find and fix SMS disruptions. Click on the link and then select "Get started". We're here if you have any questions. Thank you for contacting AT&T Community Forums.

Actuator,

Thank you for that! It's weird how one day it works, and one day it doesn't, thru no fault of your own.  I don't understand why this is so difficult for a network carrier and phone maker to communicate. I understand how frustrating this is.

I may just do that.  Coverage isn't as good where I live tho, but I'm considering everything at the moment. Sharing and receiving pictures is part of communicating on a cell phone these days. My friends are frustrated too.

Thank you for sharing your solution!!
