Scam: "AT&T Free Msg: You came in ... in the Connecticut AT&T SWEEPSTAKES"

I received a text that says "AT&T Free Msg: Makenzie! You came in 2nd in the Connecticut AT&T SWEEPSTAKES! Claim your bounty here : (website link), or show this code at AT&T story (code)"

I do not live in Connecticut so I assume this is a scam but just to be sure.

This message was sent to my phone; said "Activate Protection" with link that opened McAfee which I don't use. I have Norton on my phone but it doesn't show a problem. How was my number leaked on the dark web & cause this phone problem?

Moved to wireless forum, your home phone doesn’t receive texts. That is a scam text and not from ATT. You should not have clicked the link, hopefully it didn’t do anything. The spammers and scammers send these texts to all possible numbers. Your number likely wasn’t leaked.

Clearly these messages are phishing expeditions, I  also get random phone calls.

To avoid having to guess if a call is legitimate I have decided to record all legitimate numbers to my contacts. If I receive an unrecorded legitimate number call, they leave a voice mail and I call back after entering their info in my contact list.

Similarly with legitimate text messages, I enter the number in contacts.

These bogus calls and text messages should inoculate us and prevent us from answering these baits.
