New cell number mistakenly assigned AppleID

Just got a new phone ( not an iPhone) for my son.  If I txt him with iMessage on it goes to the wrong person.  If I turn iMessage off the txt goes to the right phone.   How do I remove the association between the new phone number and the incorrect AppleID?

You don’t. Only the owner of the Apple ID that has that number associated with it can remove it from their Apple ID.

That’s really inconvenient.  So, we get a used number and I guess it’s already assigned to some AppleID.   What if the person with the AppleID won’t remove the number?  Can Apple support help?

thanks!

@CliffM456

If your son is listed in your phone contacts list as an iPhone, your phone will continue to try to send as iMessage.

Other than just being a jerk, I can’t think of any reason the Apple ID owner wouldn’t remove it other than being deceased. When you send an iMessage to that number, does it show being delivered and read? If so, try asking them to remove. They likely don’t want to get messages for that number.  I don’t know if Apple support will help.

Where is that set?  As far as I can tell his number is just set as ‘mobile’.   Thanks.

@CliffM456  You may want to delete the message thread to your son and delete him from your contacts and then add him again. This seams to work for most users.

You never know.   I’m just trying to have a backup.  I did send a note to the incorrect person, hoping they’ll help out.

@lizdance40 None of my contact’s with Apple devices show that they have iPhones nor do I see anywhere where that can be edited or specified.
