Multimedia/Text messages received and no number on usage report

Looking at my current usage I see many recieved Multimedia messages and there is no number from who sent it? Just a time and date. Why is this. Did the person block their number? Thanks!

Hi mbollerud1976!

If the person who is sending you that message is using a 3rd party texting application (such as Whatsapp), it is a data message and not tied to a traditional phone number and most times will not appear on your bill as a phone number.
