Is there a data usage difference between using an active iPhone or on device using iPhone's hotspot?

I have an iPhone 8 (my current phone) as well as an old iPhone 6 (that has no cell service/sim). I'm going on a road trip and would rather NOT have my iPhone 8 stuck up on the dashboard all day for Apple Maps navigation. I would rather use my old iPhone 6 as my Maps device (up on the dash) and have it just connect to my iPhone 8's hotspot (so that it gets traffic updates and such).  This would also free my iPhone 8 up to be used to check Facebook or whatever (by passengers, of course). I don't think there is any problem doing that, I was just curious if I there is any difference in the amount of data consumed (assuming my old iPhone didn't have any other apps using data). Anyone know if there is some difference between the two options?

Nope.  Same data as if used straight off the 8.

The only warning is the 6 will treat it like any other WiFi connection, so it might process back up and updates.  So shut off back ups.
