iMessage MMS issue over Wi-Fi

Okay so about a week ago i've been having an issue with MMS over iMessage. I can send regular iMessages just fine but when I try to send a photo/video it will not send. It will just stay at 90% then say "failed to send". When someone sends me a MMS iMessage it will say "Tap to download" when i tap it, nothing will happen. This issue ONLY happens when connected to my Wi-Fi. When I can use data everything works just as normal. I have tried pretty much everything. I have signed in and out of iMessage and icloud. I have contacted apple and my internet provider but I still have no solution. At this point im thinking its the internet provider. I am on a NAVAL base so it is public Wi-Fi but it does require a subscription.

My phone is the iPhone XS MAX with the most current software.

There is no such thing as MMS over iMessage. SMS and MMS messages are totally different than iMessages, they just both use the same app. SMS and MMS messages are sent via ATT messaging servers over the cellular network. iMessages are sent via Apple messaging servers. MMS messages require a cellular data connection. The only way to send or receive MMS messages over WiFi is if WiFi calling is enabled and active.

@sandblaster Thank you for clearing that up. So i'm just having issues with photos/videos over imessage. I can send them just fine with iMessage using my data. The issue is that I don't get any cellular service in my barracks here. Also my wifi calling works and is enabled.

I have the same phone and just started having the same problem.  Can send pics over cellular, but all of a sudden, they are failing over the AT&T fiber (I have a gig connecting and mesh wifi - the phone and mesh are over a year old).  Did you find out anything?

Hello @keysjerry, thank you for reaching out.

We'd like to look into why you aren't able to send MMS messages over WiFi.

With some details, we can assist you to the best of our ability:

  • Is your device software up to date?
  • Have you tried resetting your devices network settings?
  • Also, have you tried Troubleshooting your device with our TS&R tool? This tool discovers technical/service concerns if any and can result in quick fixes. Just click on the "Fix an Issue" tab and choose your device, and follow the guided steps.

Please let us know.

I think the reboot of my iPhone may have cleared the problem.  I know the SW is up to date as well.

thanks for the info on the TS&R tool, I will try that if the problem recurs

thank you!
