How to group text more than 10 on AT&T

Learn what devices support Advance Messaging

_GroupMessageLimit_.png

The Wait is over! Through 2021, AT&T is continuing to increasing the number of people you can group text. It is slowly being rolled out and tested on many devices. Check out David T's  Advance Messaging page for more information regarding group messaging and the new features to come.

***********Information below is still valid for some devices until the update is pushed to it.***********

***********We do not know when your device will support group messaging but it is coming.***********

 Why Are There Limits?

AT&T has implemented a limit to the number of group message participants as a way to protect our customers from spam and/or malicious software. AT&T is vigilant about protecting you, our customers, from unsolicited text message spam.

Is AT&T Going To Update The Limit?

Some devices have the ability to send group messages with up to 30 contacts. More updates are coming to increase that number but I do not have any information when a change will take place. Last updated 2/23/2021.

If spam messages have affected you, you can report them by:

  • Forwarding a copy of the SMS and MMS spam to short code 7726 (SPAM).
  • You are not charged for forwarding the spam message to 7726.

@WholeSinger

You havent had a contract in a long time.  And it’s been years.  ATT has no intention of changing.

@lizdance40@I suppose "contract" was a bad choice of word.  My phone is almost paid off, so switching won't be as costly or wastefull.  I know people have been complaining for years, but 6 months ago an employee said they were looking into it.  I get that is probably lip service, but one could hope.  I like AT&T as a company, other than this tiny, but unforgivable, issue.

I strongly agree with others in this thread that the explanation for the limit being related to spam is nonsense.  This has been a frustrating problem for years already.

It would be very helpful if there was an industry standard around this limit.  All it takes is one person’s carrier in a large group text to have a limit less than the starting number to result in replies only be received by a portion of the original group. As a result, the problem isn’t solved until every member of a large group chat has a carrier whose limit is equal or greater than the desired number of members in a group text.

In absence of a standard, AT&T should at least match what their largest competitor has had in place for ages.

I just signed up for 2 years with buy one get one free, I will leave AT&T after two years because I can’t text my family’s members of 14 people in the same messages.

I wouldn't consider this 'solved'

This is a ridiculous limitation. Let me have the freedom to chat with as many friends and family members as I need to. I'll be forced to switch providers soon if this isn't corrected. I'll take my chances with this so called spam that this system isn't preventing anyway since I get spam messages daily if I have anything advertised for sale online

This issue has not been resolved.  This is an ongoing problem that needs to be looked into.  We should be given the choice.  if we want to be able to up the limit we should be able to.  I have been an ATT customer for close to 15 years and I am really debating on switching carriers because of this issue.  I cannot participate in my family group chats without confusion.  my messages only go to 10 of the 14 people.  I also have at least 4 friend groups that i cannot participate in.  I should not have to deal with an app when the messaging is built into my phone and i would have to pay extra for a service that is being blocked due to my carrier and their outdated view on group messages.  i get more spam phone calls that no one is doing anything about then spam messages.  This is terrible customer service on ATT part and i cannot believe that this is something they refuse to deal with.  so very disappointed.

I too need this limit changed.  I had to communicate this past weekend with people at work, about 16 of them and this caused major headache trying to keep every up to date on the progress.  Also been with ATT for probably 15 to 20 years.  You need to change this and give us the option to limit or not.

I'm getting pretty sick of the "You're a valued customer, and we listen" responses on this. C'mon AT&T. NO ONE else has this limitation. FIVE PAGES of people are complaining about it. UH? 🤦‍♂️

Please get rid of this limitation. Or increase the limit. Or let me opt out of having any limitation.

I get 5 text messages everytime our coach sends a text to parents of a team of 12 and different people respond. I have to send multiple messages and have to repeat responses when I need to send important messages to family. It's ridiculous. Please offer a fix. And fix it sooner than later.
