How to group text more than 10 on AT&T

Learn what devices support Advance Messaging

_GroupMessageLimit_.png

The Wait is over! Through 2021, AT&T is continuing to increasing the number of people you can group text. It is slowly being rolled out and tested on many devices. Check out David T's  Advance Messaging page for more information regarding group messaging and the new features to come.

***********Information below is still valid for some devices until the update is pushed to it.***********

***********We do not know when your device will support group messaging but it is coming.***********

 Why Are There Limits?

AT&T has implemented a limit to the number of group message participants as a way to protect our customers from spam and/or malicious software. AT&T is vigilant about protecting you, our customers, from unsolicited text message spam.

Is AT&T Going To Update The Limit?

Some devices have the ability to send group messages with up to 30 contacts. More updates are coming to increase that number but I do not have any information when a change will take place. Last updated 2/23/2021.

If spam messages have affected you, you can report them by:

  • Forwarding a copy of the SMS and MMS spam to short code 7726 (SPAM).
  • You are not charged for forwarding the spam message to 7726.

You are losing customers will this policy and I personally do not buy this argument.  My friend who use Verizon does not get spammed and at&t’s policy is a BIG inconvenience for a large number of at&t users

Is this still true that AT&T only supports group messaging of upto 10 people. If the group size is greater than 10, which 10 members (top 10, bottom 10, random 10 etc.) get the messages.

Does the limit of ten members apply even if the imessage is turned on, recipient list is greater than 10 members and it includes both iphone and android users.

Yes, its still true...when I get a group text from someone that has 10 or more recipients, the texting app won't let me reply to the group. I get a failure code tha says "cannot reply to group texts larger than10".

Hello...what I (and I am a large group message expert) have noticed now from my AT&T subscriber friends in my large chat groups is that if they  (ATT phone subscribers) have an iPhone with iMessage on as the default message setting, then other Apple Phone users in the group WILL get their messages in the Group thread but non-Apple (iPhone) users do Not get their message nor is there any indication (to the non iPhone users) that they even sent a message.   However, the ATT user will get the non iPhone users messages in that same thread.

So, it's a tad bizarre.  ATT user gets my messages in the group but I can't get his.  This started a couple of months ago .  It appears with a recent upgrade, ATT (or Apple) made some attempt at rectifying the situation but not fully.

I am a long time Verizon user (been a VZ customer since the Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile days - BATNM - remember those days!?) And have dealt with large groups involving all providers for 15-20 years since the days of only being able to sms broadcast group messages, and by far, ATT is an inferior provider in all aspects; not just with respect to Group Messaging .

Switch Immediately.  I have never had a real issue with Verizon.

This is an issue which has been around for a long time and yet AT&T does not want to resolve this.

Come on, AT&T, are you NOT listening to your customers ?

Switched the family to Verizon with unlimited and some free phones. Good bye and good luck. Hopefully ATT addresses this for you.

This is straight trash  I wish I would’ve never switched over to this stupid network the calls drop and I have a large family one way for us to stay in contact is by texting in a group message and now only the ppl who have iPhones in my family group text  can see

my messages! It’s very annoying and the reason behind why you can’t have more than 10 ppl is CRAP! Att do better!

It would be nice if AT&T would increase the limit to 20 to be more compatible with other providers. The 10 person limitation is a big annoyance for me and I may switch to Verizon in 2019.

This is what i just found out tonight. I have a samsung galaxy note 8 and my wife has google pixel 3. We have same network At&t. In A new year's group message from our coworkers, she was able to reply using her goole pixel 3, but i cant reply using my samsung note 8. I get the message that my network only allow 10 recipients at a time.

What I did was I downloaded the 'messages' app from google playstore and made it my default app for messaging and I was able to reply to our group message that has 19 members.

The negative side is it ported the previous messages from my samsung 'messages' app but its not showing my responses on those texts. Im gonna try to observe if that will be the case in the future messges.

Hope this will be useful in getting around with AT&T's stupid policy. Happy new year everyone!
