Hot spot limit cap

I’m on the unlimited plan and the kids are constantly connecting their non-wireless devices to the hotspot with 10 GB of data per line. Question one is there a way to monitor the amount of hotspot data used? Two, does the hot spot cease functioning when we reach the 10 GB cap or does it keep going and we get billed for overage? Can I cap the usage at the 10 GB if the overage is true?

Being able to manage Mobile Hotspot data usage is definitely important to prevent receiving overage charges. I will be happy to provide you some options!


With the AT&T AllAccess app you have the ability to monitor your usage. These Account Management tools help you avoid overage fees as it helps you set alters and notifications when approaching your data limit.


The Device Support Tool is another excellent resource, which provides instructions on how to locate data usage directly from your device. After selecting your phone’s make and model, click on Tutorials > Connectivity > Data usage.


In addition, this excellent article provides more options to track your data usage and ways to set limitations or restrictions. Keep in mind with the AT&T Mobile Share Advantage Plan, you never have to worry about overage charges if you exceed your data allowances. For more details, please click here.

@MikeRN If you hit the 10GB limit, data is supposed to slow down to 2G speeds. We have heard the data slow down has not been happening. Regardless, there is no overage charge.

Thanks All!  The bill is high enough already.  Was concerned about the kids going over....  as they use over 22gb monthly

Netgear 815S stopped monitoring use age.

ATT has utterly FAILED to provide support.

Ongoing issue for MANY CUSTOMERS for months now.

STILL NO RESPONSE after many contacts and hours on phone trying to resolve issue.

It's a same how a mobile hotspot can have a true unlimited plus plain but a cell phone cant noting they could do this but atat would have to push for this they tell you to buy a hotspot being they could just at it to the phone like the mobile hotspot for the same price instead of slowing you down no days 10 or 15 gb can be used in a hour time when gaming and 4 g lte seems to do better then most ISP can

They now slow it down to 128 kbs which is virtually unusable for anything that requires WiFi.  I live in an area where regular WiFi does not reach so I have to rely on a hotspot which lasts only a day for me at most.  As an avid gamer i don’t like the change and it disappoints me that I trusted it.

Att never intended for mobile data to replace home internet service.  You cannot be an ‘avid gamer’ with out a home internet provider of high speed data.

@grantw99 they advertised it as slowing down to 128 kbps. What was there to trust exactly? Sounds more like you didn't believe what was advertise. They sold dedicated hotspots for over a year that were advertised as being unlimited.

That is bull and add in the second part with your imagination. Yes they advertise slowing down. But in a downplayed fashion. What is the focal point of every form that their advertising uses is the word “unlimited.” And in anyway to use this word in regard to what is provided by AT&T (and other carriers, too) is an outright LIE!!!! At some point these false claims are going to once again result in AT&T losing a case in court and having to pay out money to customers. And please note that it was called here before the fact. And also note, that whatever the company response to this is will also be seen for the bull (fill in the blank) that it is.

See that is where you differ from what unlimited really is...  its not unlimited speed...  Its unlimited data which ATT is providing even if they slow it down.  Unlimited plans have no overages so yes data is unlimited.  Even at 128kpbs att is providing unlimited data since you can still access data even those its slower 2g speeds more like gprs speeds....

Unlimited data came out back in the 3g speed days.  It was still called “unlimited “ then too.  

Per the FCC definition, unlimited data is data without any overage charges no matter how much you use.

There is no overage charge, but it is unusable at this point. 128kb per second is not what I thought I was agreeing too. I don’t appreciate ATT’s failure to comunicate these “requirements” and then almost exactly one year later throttling the data to unusable limits. I feel betrayed. I have been dedicated to ATT for phone/internet service for over 10 years and now, because of its fraudulent “miscommunications” and unsatisfactory services, I must consider another company.

No, there isn’t an overage charge. But it is unusable after it is throttled. 128kb per second is not what I thought I was agreeing too. I don’t appreciate ATT’s failure to comunicate these “requirements” and then almost exactly one year later throttling the data to unusable limits. I feel betrayed. I have been dedicated to ATT for phone/internet service for over 10 years and now, because of its fraudulent “miscommunications” and unsatisfactory services, I must consider another company.

Horse pucky.   The unlimited plans have a list of included features.  The list was written “10/15 gigs of hotspot” as a feature of the plan.  Yes you agreed to it.  It’s still in your plan description in your My ATt Account.  

See the screen shots of the original webpage add, and using the plan comparison tool.  Both clearly show hotspot limit.
