Cannot send or receive pictures in Messages MMS

I recently stopped being able to send or receive MMS pictures in messages app on my Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G.  This started within the last 7 days.  I have tried everything, power resets, force stopping, turning on Wi-Fi calling, but to no avail.

I cannot send any Android user any kind of mms or file. It says not delivered. I tried to force stop and restart. I done all the clicking the iMessage and resetting the setting and it still won’t do it. I was on chat with someone from Apple for over an hour and they couldn’t figure it out. I called At&T and they couldn’t figure it out. It’s annoying. I noticed it after one of the upgrades but I thought that it was just a one time thing, but no, few months later it’s still happening!

Hi @Jayjaytowner,

Thanks for reaching out! Allow us to assist.

Please let us know what iPhone you have specifically, and the current iOS on your device. Next, let us know if this issue is happening in a group text, or are you unable to send texts to Android users individually? You mentioned that you basically troubleshoot the iMessage; what did you try exactly? When you say you reset the setting, was that the network settings on your phone? Or, was that related to the iMessage?

If you haven't reset your network settings, that's the first thing we'd like you to do. We look forward to your response!

I have an iPhone 11 14.4.2 ios. This is happening in both group and individual messages. I did a iMessage reset and a phone reset, a few times. I have talked to Apple a few times and At&T on several occasions and At&T said that this was happening across the network and that it would be fixed 3 days ago, but it’s not! I have been walked through the same troubleshooting content to the point of knowing what to do before they ask! This is the only way I can talk to some of my kin and I can’t send pics or anything to them.

Thank you for reaching back out to us @Jayjaytowner !

For the current messaging issue that you have been experiencing, a common fix for this would be for the user to Deregister iMessage from their device. Doing this will remove your number from iMessage services, which will in turn give your text messaging system the ability to function as expected, when dealing with non-iPhone devices.

You can Deregister iMessage Online or by turning off iMessage in Settings.

  • Disable iMessage: Settings > Messages > iMessage Off

If the problem still continues feel free to reach back out for further assistance.

We hope this helps!

bought Alcatel Smartflip at Target Jan 2021; zipcode 48187; strong wifi signal. I cannot receive pics, nor can I send pics. "Auto Retrieve Message" is not an option shown in settings. I turn on data. I even turned on international roam. It says network failure. I never had this with my previous ATT flip phone.

I read the following instructions on this forum:

  • We recommend that you try the following on your device. In the Messages app screen, press Right Menu to access Options > select Settings and press OK to view the following options:

Auto Retrieve Messages: Select this option to automatically retrieve all your multimedia messages.

When On without roaming is selected, the multimedia message header plus the message body and attachments will automatically download to your phone when not in roaming mode, this is default option.

When On with roaming option is selected, the multimedia message header plus the message body and attachments will automatically download to your phone when in roaming mode. When you select Off, only the multimedia message header will be retrieved and shown in your Messaging screen.

I have a Samsung Note 20 Ultra on a plan that was just upgraded to 5G.  Ever since the upgrade my sms and mms have been inconsistent.  I have the latest software update and using Google Messages.

Restarting phone, switching it into airplane mode, turning off wifi calling all do nothing.

Hi @Spexs,

Thank you for reaching out. We'd like to find out why and help you receive MMS and SMS.

Sometimes, a SIM card incompatibility may be responsible for your experience. If you are still using the old SIM card, we recommend you visit an AT&T store to change your SIM card to see if that helps.

Also make use of our troubleshooting tool here, selecting your device and then messages, following the subsequent prompts, to see if it resolves the error.

Let us know if this helps.

Starting on Saturday 04/17/21 my MMS began showing the NoSubject: Message Size: Expires; box and shows the spinning download symbol but doesn't download group texts or pictures. The Error: Network Error  message occasionally appears. I have factory reset. Turned of wifi. Turned off mobile data. Checked the APN. (Nxtgenphone). I've searched every forum suggestion. No solution so far. HELP!?

OK. So after trying multiple suggestions I fixed it by going to Settings- Connections- Mobile Networks- Access Point Names- Add (upper right corner). When given the option to edit, type in; Name: ATT Nxtgenphone APN: NXTGENPHONE (All caps). Then the only other change is in the field for APN type: default, supl, mms, hipri. Make sure your 2g capability and international roam 2g are enables as well. Worked immediately for me.

Good morning @Tinyfxds,

Thanks for reaching out to us. We can certainly understand how important it is to stay in touch during these times.

It would be a pleasure to assist you with finding the cause and solution to being unable to send MMS text messages.

We always want to make sure we are covering all bases, and would like you to try the recommended steps:

  1.  Lets start by troubleshooting your device using our easy step-by-step guide.
  2. We recommend changing the settings in your device to enable SMS text messaging and turning iMessage off (if you have an Apple device.) To disable iMessage, head into the Settings app and tap “Messages.” Complete the process of turning iMessage off by flicking the switch.
  3. Make sure your device is completely up to date and check if there are any available updates.
  4. If you have a Dual sim card with IOS 13 or higher we may need to enable Cellular Data Switching. to enable Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data. Tap Cellular Data Switching toggle button to turn on.
  5. You may also check for outages in your area by clicking here.

Please be advised this is a known issue and the previous steps above are what is recommended to work around this problem. If neither of the directions resolve your issue, please let us know.

Is your cellular data on and working? You need a working cellular data connection to send or receive mms messages.

I updated my note 20 ultra on april 17, 2021 and since then have not been able to send or receive picture messages through regular texting apps. I use Textra as my default, so I tried switching to the native Samsung messaging app and still had the problem. I can send pictures through Facebook messenger and instagram, and sending regular text messages works just fine.

I reset my network settings, cleared the cash in my texting apps, did a soft reset of my phone, reset my mms settings, turned my cellular data off and back on, toggled wifi on and off, toggled airplane mode off and on, took my sim card out and then put it back, and done everything else I've been able to find on the internet, and nothing works.

I did put my sim in my old S20 Ultra and I was able to send and receive mms through my texting apps just fine. So I know it must have something to do with my Note 20 ultra and/or the most recent update. I have AT&T Firstnet, if that makes a difference. I've tried seeing if I can uninstall the update, but it doesn't look like that's possible

Let's look into what's going on with MMS on your Note 20 Ultra, @Mellert87!

Looks like you tried all the necessary troubleshooting steps to try to resolve this recent trend that developed since your device updated. However, we want to know a little more about your experience:

  • Is your device an AT&T brand?

On your Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, go to an affected message thread and long press on one of the messages then select details. Check whether the type shows Advanced Messaging or legacy SMS/MMS. Also, disable Advanced Messaging in the settings then back on and test the results:

  1. From the home screen, select the Messages app.
  2. Select the Menu icon, then select Settings.
  3. Select Advanced Messaging > Advanced Messaging switch.

Give these steps a try and let us know how it goes!

My device is ATT brand. I tried opening the default messages app, but there is no longer a setting to turn advanced messaging on or off.

There's a tab for more settings, including text and multimedia messages, but there's nowhere under either tab to change the advanced settings. Perhaps this is a change from the update?

Starting in the last week, I cannot send or receive MMS messages (pictures) to a couple of specific phone numbers. A week ago I could. I can still send and receive MMS messages to other numbers. The numbers that I have a problem with are not having problems sending and receiving MMS messages. I have restarted the phone using the volume down and power buttons and reset the network connections.
