Calling and texting with my child while they are in Japan

My child will be doing Study Abroad this summer in Japan (I’ll still be in the US). Do we need to do anything different from how we typically call or text one another? Do either of us need to change any settings on our iPhones? Is there a charge for calling or texting? We are on the same family plan.

But I *do* need to add the "international day pass" service to their line, correct

Yes.

No. The iPhone will automatically add country code, if needed.

Do either of us need to change any settings on our iPhones?

No

Is there a charge for calling or texting?

Not for you. The phone roaming in Japan is subject to international roaming charges. Highly advise you add the international day pass to their line. They should also activate WiFi calling, if it hasn’t already been. They can call and text with no roaming charges when connected to WiFi calling.

Hi twinsmom40, let's shed a light on your International call & texting inquiry to Japan!

Thank you to our ACE sandblaster, for the prompt reply.

Our current AT&T Unlimited plans have unlimited texting from the U.S. to 200+ countries, learn more about sending text, pics and videos to countries abroad. If you make calls or texts to countries outside the U.S., press (+) or 011 on your phone’s keypad, then the country code and the local number.

You can add AT&T International calling to get Unlimited calling from the U.S. to 85+ countries at $15 per month, per line. Check out the eligible countries and rates and how to sign in and purchase on the link provided.

We hope this helps, we are here if you need additional questions! Thank you for posting on the AT&T Community Forums!

@twinsmom40 Ignore ATTHelp’s advice. You do not need any international calling plan to call your child’s number while they are in Japan.

But I *do* need to add the "international day pass" service to their line, correct, in case they need to contact me and WiFi calling isn't available? And yes, WiFi calling is already activated on all of our iPhones.
