Broken text messages...

Whenever I send a text message From my iPhone 6 to a customer over at Verizon who uses a Motorola some smart phone, any message longer than 67 characters gets broken into pieces which all arrive at different times and out of sequence. Does anyone know what causes this?

Hello Carlgat2,

Welcome to the Community Forums! This is a very good question, and I would be more than willing to address it for you.

Text messages are also known as SMS, and this stands for Short Message Service. The limit is typically about 160 characters per message; after this point, they are broken up into separate messages.

The separate messages are all converted from the iOS format to the Android or Windows device format. This may take longer for some pieces of the message, which is why you receive them out of order.

I hope this fully addresses your concern.

Unfortunately it does not answer my problem. I know the Verizon places a 160 character limit on SMS messages. However, when I sen iOS iMessages they break up into about 67byte chunks, even when the total length is much less that 160 characters. (I always count the number of characters).
The flow is:
iMessage>iPhone iOS>(AT&T or ComcastWiFi)>Apple???>Verizon>Android mobile (Motorola and LG phones).
That’s my guess as to the sequence. I don’t know if Apple servers are in the flow or not. I also don’t know for sure whether iMessages go via WiFi or not.
Somewhere in that flow the messages get chopped into 67bytes or less making anything but very cryptic communications very frustrating for the receiving parties.
Is AT&T aware of this problem?

Hello @Carlgat2,

Thank you for clarifying. iMessages are typically sent over Wi-Fi and data (if wireless internet is not available). Have you tried turning this feature off when sending a message? If not, you can do this by going to Settings > Messages > iMessage.

This issue is not specific to AT&T, as I have encountered this issue between Android devices on other carriers as well. We’re working with the other carriers to make this a more seamless process.

I look forward to your response.

Thanks for you suggestion. I tried switching off iMessage but a message of 148 character was still chopped up. 😞

Hey @Carlgat2,

Thanks for the update!

Just to confirm, does this only happen when messaging one person or multiple? Do you know if this happens when the recipient texts anyone else? This information will help us find out the root of the problem.

I look forward to your response!

So two of my contacts have reported it to me. Each has said it is not only my messages. There may be more who have never told me about it. Both contacts of mine do not use iPhones. It’s a real puzzle. Somehow I think that particular sequence of events causes the problem , but I cannot say which step in the process causes the problem. I sent sms from iMessage to one contact this morning (not iMessage) but it still broke it up.

I switched recently from Verizon to ATT and now all my friends complain of my messages coming like this. I was on an Android there and am on an Android now. Messages are split into small chunks whether they have an iPhone or Android. Very frustrating. Considering switching back.

@Zimmermy

Unfortunately I can’t find the thread on Verizon which explains this, but it has something to do with how Verizon SMS and MMS is programmed.   Both incoming and outgoing SMS is broken up because of some screwy way it counts characters.  I’ll s

keep looking, but their search is lousy.

Hello @Carlgat2,

Thanks again for providing the requested information!

Based on what you told me, we will need to look further into the issue, as it appears to be affecting multiple customers across the carriers. I apologize for any inconvenience may have caused.

I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day!

Can we all get an update on this? This issue is extremely frustrating, because AT&T seems to be at the center of it. I have no problems sending text messages to others on non-ATT networks, yet if it goes to an ATT customer, it gets broken apart. What will it take for ATT to be responsible and do something about fixing this?
