2 factor authentication codes blocked

I just switched from Verizon and am trying to set up my phone with certain apps like Facebook, Messenger and Instagram all of which have 2 factor authenitication sent up. They're supposed to be sending my phone number a code but I'm not receiving it and am being locked out of my accounts. Help!
