who do I call to have my landline moved?

I moved from Corning California to Cottonwood California and would like to have a landline at the new address in Cottonwood California. The cell service is sketchy at best out here, so we need a reliable phone service for emergency services. I've tried several different AT&T customer service phone numbers that claim to work with landlines, but no help was available.

You say moved. Are you in the same area code and exchange as before? If so put in a move order. If not, you'll need to cancel your old address and start a new service. You can ask if the number can be ported but if you had a traditional landline at your old address it's doubtful. Traditional landlines are being phased out, so if that's what you're looking for make that very clear to the rep you get, not all are versed in POTS lines.

Does ATT offer hardwired internet service to your address?

They provide service to about 84% of zip code 96022, Cottonwood Ca.

If yes, then ATT Phone ( Uverse VOIP) will be available as an add on to the internet service.

The zip code has (6) Fixed Wireless providers and (2) satellite internet companies with local cable company service covering under 54% of zip code (also offers VOIP phone service).

Appears your phone choices will be cellular or VOIP.

  • California is the 14th most connected state in the U.S.
  • In Tehama County, approximately 30,000 people do not have access to 25mbps wired broadband.
  • Approximately 11,000 people in Tehama County don't have access to any wired internet.

Thank you for the ideas.  Unfortunately, the only service that hits my exact location, (meaning, how my home sits in relationship to internet providers available), is HughesNet.  HughesNet is very pricey and very slow do to latency.  Honestly, HughesNet might be as slow as our old hardwired internet back when WebTV was a provider.  HughesNet phone is pretty bad as well.  Very hard to have a conversation due to the delay.  We end up talking over each other and the service will drop out for no reason on occasion.  Hardwire internet is not available, per AT&T.  All other internet providers require a direct line of sight to their repeaters, (Trees and hills blocking sight, even with a house mounted extension pole).  All cell service is at best one to two bars when it works.  We have Verizon, but willing to try others if they work a bit better.  Starlink isn't offering any new customer account in my area last I checked.  So finally, I know the prior owner of this property had a landline here, because I see the phone jacks inside and out.  The AT&T phoneline is right at the end of our access road.  I see AT&T service trucks parked down there quite often.  I've called AT&T several times today, but no luck with techs.  If I could find the magic phone number that would get me to the right department for landline service in Northern California, that would be wonderful.  Thank you again for the ideas and help.

There is no magic number. Just make sure they understand that your asking about a traditional landline, POTS.

Also you don't need to repeat your post.

Any luck, @husqvarna26 ?

I also live in rural northern CA and I have nothing but Hughes as well and have the same experience as you.

I asked AT&T to establish landline service and long story short, they are completely incompetent.

Here's the long story: they said everything was good to go about 4 mos ago and they literally didn't even call my landline number to check (if they did, they'd hear "bee-boo-boo...this number is disconnected")

I called their tech support maybe 6 times over the course of a couple of weeks and each time they said, "oh we're on it, it'll be done tomorrow". On the final time, I finally said, "ok, you call me when you're done." I inquired about billing and they said, "don't worry, we'll put a note in not to bill you until everything is working". Boy did they sound like they knew what they were doing.

Fast forward to today, I get back to the home and find bills from them, including ones threatening collections and disconnection...of my landline service they never even established!

Again, I call their number, first guy is apparently billing / collections and he asks, "are you calling to pay your bill?" hahaha, I gave a terse "nope" and paused for effect. Then I tell him the aforementioned story and he's very apologetic and understanding and says, "Let me get charges reversed and I'll get you to tech support" - again, I felt I had hit the jackpot with a person who could get sh*t done! But I get bounced around 5 times over 45 minutes (billing, customer service, tech support, customer service again, tech support again) each time they ask my phone number and why I'm calling (ugh - but this is a sub-rant for another day.)

Finally, the tech support (repair) person I spoke to last said, "I can't help you because your service has been cancelled due to non-payment, I'll have to transfer you to collections to get this resolved." I blew a fuse at this point. I said, "I'm not going to sit around another 45 minutes and get transferred 5 more times and explain the situation AT&T put me in. I know it's not your fault (personally), but I'm done with AT&T"

The dysfunction at this organization is mind-blowing and I feel terrible for the frontline employees, neutered of any ability to actually do anything but transfer (Edited per community guidelines) off customers to other departments.

(Edited per community guidelines), I'm not even a customer yet! I can't even give them my money, and I tried (for sh*ts and giggles). Get this - to sign up for an online account to pay your bills, they place an automated CALL TO YOUR LANDLINE with an authorization code you then enter on their billing site to sign up...I just wish I could see the expression on that automated dialers face when it hears "bee-boo-boo - this number has been disconnected". They can't call the number to make sure service is working before telling you it works, much less before billing you, much less before sending you to collections and canceling your "service" but they can force you to receive a phone call from them before letting you pay your bill online. Even Mr. Bean writers couldn't make this sh*t up.
