Unable to specify which phone answers the call on a AT&T Uverse system

We have two corded  AT&T phones on one phone line; Phone #1 is in the bedroom and Phone two is in the living room. 

The phone's Model CL4940 with Digital Answering System

When a call comes in and they leave an answer, the phone in the living room picks up and records the incoming message.


We'd like phone #1 rather than phone #2 to answer the call and record the incoming message.


How do we set this up?

You basically need to turn the answering system off on phone #2 and turn it on on phone #1. Go to https://telephones.att.com/product-support/manuals and download the user manual. The section on the answering system should tell you how.
