Fax not working anymore?

Our Fax Machine had been working before we switched over to AT&T. The setup had some slight issues, phone lines hooked up to the wrong thing, etc, etc. We got things sorted out and our phones are working well. Well, today we need to send a fax over. Our printer has its own phone number for fax. Yet whenever we call it, it doesn't pick up that it is being called. It just keeps ringing and ringing. Over and over again. I ran a Fax Test Report today, where it detected that there is not an active telephone line? Yet everything looks to be plugged in. Is this something on our end that we are doing wrong? Or is this something where a technician would need to come out?

Exactly what kind of phone service do you have?

How are your phones (that are working) connected to the AT&T phone network?

How is the fax machine connected to the AT&T phone network?

We have our phone lines through AT&T. The phones work great. No cutting in and out like our previous provider. We have one main line for the business and the other for the fax machine. The fax is directly hooked up to the phone lines. Each one reads that they are all set and good to go. (Customer support said everything looked fine). Everything has been unplugged, restarted, and plugged in again. Yet the printer still says that there is no phone line. Despite the phone line for fax ringing and ringing.

Okay, so you have regular 1FB lines for phone and fax.  Have you tried connecting a phone directly to the jack the fax machine is plugged into?  If not, please do.  Do you get a dial tone?  Can you complete a call?

Hey there @GSC2319 we understand your concerns with your fax machine not operating properly and we'd be glad to guide you in the right direction towards a resolution.

At this time based off the information provided it looks like this can be a concern within your printer and the fax machine since everything is working properly on our end.

Please let us know us know if you've followed up with the manufacturer of the fax and printer and followed the needed troubleshooting steps for getting your devices connected.

Feel free to reach back out to us and confirm, thank you.

Well, we were able to have someone come out. It was a rather simple solution but turns out the original tech plugged the wires into the wrong connection on the printer. A quick change and it was all better. But that is something we will check for sure if anything like that happens again!

I just had a landline established into my home from AT&T for a fax machine only. The guy had to cut a hole in my bedroom wall and there is now a black box there.  The phone line works if you want to make a phone call (which I don't need, I have cells for that) but when I go to send a Fax, because I need that for my job, it will NOT send.  I am able to receive a fax, for some reason, but just cannot send.  I have tried local numbers, long distance numbers, dialing a 1, not dialing a 1, I've tried using a DSL gateway thingee on both ends, in both holes, etc.  AT&T came back out and we got it to fax out one time.  We thought things were fixed.  They are not.  Hasn't sent out another fax since.  So, we bought a brand new $500 fax machine, thinking my old fax machine wouldn't work with AT&T's new fiberoptic whatever whatever.  However, I am getting the exact same messages.  It tries to send a fax, dials the number, connects, then sometimes I get the "do do doo...we're sorry, your call did not go through" or sometimes it tells me to dial a 1 or not to dial a 1 (for the same number....)...I have tried several different fax numbers...I am about to lose my mind.  I have it hooked up as a FAX only, with no additional telephone connected.  SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME.

Digital and fax don't play together well. On your fax set to the lowest speed and turn error correction off.

If you're getting the "doo...doo....doo... Your call cannot be completed as dialed" then it sounds like there's something amiss with your dialing.  Perhaps you've programmed the fax machine to dial a one and AT&T Voice will not accept the 1, or similar.

But, as spoom2 says, fax machines often do not play well with VOIP.  Not well at all.  I'd ask your fax machine vendor how to best make it work with VOIP.  (There's not much, well anything, you can do about the VOIP configuration).
