I have a DL72310 model cordless phone. When I press the # (pound sign) key the handset displays what's similar to an upside down "A" also pressing the *(asterisk) the handset displays unreadable character.

So what's the concern? If you're prompted to push # or * it doesn't work, or you just want to see those caricatures when they're pushed? Per page 58 of the manual or pdf page 64 if you want to display a # you'd push the number 1 on the dial pad 8 times or 7 times for *. It also shows you the # or * keys display nothing so what you're seeing is most likely a filler. Manual found here
