You call customer service and at the voice prompt say cancel service.

And yet google finds it right off the bat. For those who don't have the capabilities to look it up its 800-288-2020

Thanks for the comment.
That one has to go to Google is the proof that the AT&T web site is lacking.

The comment about Google was simply to illustrate that it's quite easy to find the number. We're not your phone book. This site does have the number: scroll to the bottom of the page and you'll see a Contact Us link. Click that and you'll be asked what service and then you'll be given various contact options, including calling the phone number.

I am trying to help a 78 year old widow, with serious health issues get her land line restored. We need to be able to call 911. Had 6 calls to 911 this year before her spouse passed. ATT is telling us they can get to us January 13th at 8 PM. Today is December 30th. Are you kidding me? I have been on "hold" with ATT now for 29 minutes and 29 seconds before THEY ENDED THE CALL! Absolutely the worst service I have ever experience. We will be cancelling the phone company from (Edited per community guidelines). Shame on you ATT. I called the listed number for service. They tried to get me to use the internet "help yourself" 6 times. They will do anything to keep you from talking to a human being.

No need to spam the forums once is enough. However this is a customer populated forum not AT&T support

Also what does getting a POTS line repaired have to do with canceling service? Open your own topic or file an FCC complaint.

I have called customer service several times and I have, as noted in this thread, called 800 288 2020 and spoken "cancel service." From there I have been disconnected, forwarded to support staff that were not able to handle landlines, transferred to support staff that were not able to handle landlines, told that I had to be transferred to a 'special department' for canceling accounts and then transferred to the wrong department, told that I had to be transferred to a supervisor who then could not help me, told that I would get a call back and didn't, etc., etc. I tried to cancel online but every option related to cancelation eventually leads to a requirement to call support. This has been going on for days. I spend an hour or two on this and get nowhere and then I try again another day. Meanwhile, I am still being charged for the service. Is AT&T the very worst of all the phone companies when it comes to customer support? They seem to be offering so many services that landlines are just not a priority.
