Email set up using Outlook and/or Thunderbird

My att.net email recently stopped working on Outlook and Thunderbird. I created a new secure mail key. My password works online and on my phone. Any suggestions?

Let's see what we can do to fix your email, cohencln.

Start by troubleshooting with our Login and Email Solutions article. Use the section titled 3rd Party Mailbox - (Outlook, Apple Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird):

  • Test using webmail - If you are able to sign in to your email via the web, the issue points to the app or mailbox you are using.

  • Mailboxes - We recommend using the latest version. Updates and changes may prevent it from working properly.

  • Rebuild mailbox profile - In some instances, rebuilding the profile fixes some issues. You may lose email doing this.

  • Change your settings from POP to IMAP.

Please keep in mind that AT&T does not officially support or troubleshoot mailboxes/clients like Outlook or Thunderbird. Reaching out to the support teams for these clients is also something we recommend.

Let us know if this helped, or if you need further assistance.

What sort of error message do you get?

Try changing the email server names.  Weeks ago Yahoo mucked up something to do with the security certs on the att.net servers.  I found that by switching back to the old

yahoo.com servers email clients could connect again.

imap.mail.yahoo.com  (or pop.mail.yahoo.com for POP3)

smtp.mail.yahoo.com

I tried changing servers, I still couldn't log on. The message I get is that my password is incorrect.

Thanks for the clarification, cohencln.

Your password may not be incorrect, but try resetting it, and let us know if you're able to sign in. Also, let us know if you're getting the 205 error code.

Some email users are getting this error, and the referenced article covers what's causing it and what we're doing to resolve it.

Be sure to keep us posted.

I know you said you created a new SMK, but some people have posted the same sort of issue here and reported it took them multiple delete/create sessions for an SMK before they got one that worked.  That's ridiculous but then again, we are talking Yahoo/AT&T email service here.

At least on Thunderbird (presuming you are running one of the later versions) you can get around this by implementing OAuth2.  That allows you to use your "regular" password, the one that works for webmail logins, not the SMK.

HERE is a writeup I did recently on how to set up TB to use OAuth2.

I created a new SMK, changed the server to yahoo.com and changed incoming to OAuth2. There was not an option for outgoing. TB works, but not outlook.
