Locked out of email — error 205.2

My mother is locked out of her email on her computer, laptop and phone. She can’t log in. It doesn’t accept her password. The security questions don’t work and it won’t allow her to reset her password. We haven’t been able to reach tech support in person/in chat to help with the problem. We keep getting error message 205.2. What should we do? This is completely frustrating.

We'd be happy to assist you with logging into your email @BeckyMead!

In order to reset your password, you will need to answer the security questions. You can visit Update Security Questions and Answers if you do not remember your answers. Here's how to do this:

  • Go to Profile and then Sign-in info.
  • In the Online security questions section, select Change security questions.
  • Complete and save your security questions and answers.

Please let us know if this works for you!

We can explain why your mother is getting the 205.2 error code, BeckyMead.

Essentially, this is due to bad actors who are trying to access AT&T email accounts. We're aware that this is happening to quite a few people, and we're currently working on a resolution. You can get more information about why this is happening and what we're doing to fix it in our article that discusses the dreaded 205 error code.

In the meantime, please try the following troubleshooting options as a workaround. This has helped some users avoid the care code and sign in.

  1. Clear your browser's cache and cookies to remove any stored password information. Be sure to close and relaunch your browser afterward.
  2. Attempt to reset the password using the Forgot password option. Select the option to receive a tempoary password instead of answering the security questions. Wait 24 hours before trying to sign in again.

If you need help with anything else, please don't hesitate to let us know.

Thank you for reaching out to the AT&T Community Forums team.

Thanks!  When we click the reset the password option it only allows for answering the two security questions.  There isn't an option for a temporary password.

PLease, the normal "bad actors" cut and paste answer again.... sigh...

This has been an issue since last year.  Pretty much when the "Stay logged in for 2 weeks" option was added to ATT and Yahoo.

Nothing to do but continually reset your password back to the same password almost daily or at least every 2 weeks, and then re-log in via every device as well.

Very frustrating. And like most of the other poor customer service, the blame is put on bad actors and we are working on it.  but there is no end in sight for the 205.2 error.
