HOW TO GET AN AUTHENTICATON CODE SENT TO A NON-AT&T CELLPHONE

I CANNOT SIGN IN TO MY ATT.NET EMAIL ACCOUNT WITHOUT USING AN AUTHENTICATION CODE FROM AT&T. BUT AT&T SEEMS TO SEND THE CODE ONLY TO AN AT&T WIRELESS CELL PHONE. IT WILL NOT SEND THE CODE TO MY VERIZON WIRELESS ACCOUNT. HOW CAN I OVERCOME THIS RESTRICTION?

Let's get you back into your email, @Rob Blake!

Due to a recent security update, our email system has been requiring everyone to input a wireless number as a recovery option.

You can follow these steps if you have an AT&T Wireless number:
  1. Go to Profile, then Contact info.
  2. On the Phone tab, select Edit in the Billing phone numbers section.
  3. Enter your wireless number as the primary or secondary number.
  4. Check the box next to Use this number to recover your user ID or reset your password.
  5. Select Save.
  6. Complete any confirmation steps sent to your wireless number within 24 hours. Text message rates and other charges may apply. Check with your plan and provider.
If you do not have an AT&T Wireless number, then these are the steps you'd follow:
  1. Go to Profile and sign in with your AT&T Mail address and password.
  2. Select Sign-in info.
  3. Scroll to My linked accounts and select Manage email.
  4. Select Edit user information.
  5. Enter your wireless number and check Use this number to reset your password.
  6. Select Save Changes.
  7. Complete any final steps sent to your wireless number within 24 hours. Text message rates and other charges may apply if you don’t have an AT&T Wireless number. Check with your plan and provider.
Heads up: It can take up to 30 days before you can use your wireless number to reset your password. This is for both AT&T and non AT&T Wireless numbers.

I tried this exact suggestion.  It does NOT work.  I followed the directions above.  I got to my Sign in info page.  I edited and put in my new, non-AT&T number to get a verification code  and only got back, "Oops, this is not an AT&T number..." etc. and so AT&T would not send a code.  What did work was to just DELETE my old phone number AND add a non AT&T email address as verification, right below the phone number.  I had stupidly put down my Prodigy.net email address as my verification address!  When I used my Gmail address instead, AT&T dutifully sent a verification code there.  I only got into my system to do this when I called my old number and basically begged the new owner to tell me the code they got, which thankfully they did.
