Help with CARE CODE: 205.2 [LU003]

A few weeks ago I stopped being able to access one of my SBC Global email subaccounts via Yahoo email. I tried signing in with the username and password directly on various other platforms, but kept getting various errors. If I tried through Yahoo, it would log me into the main account, not the sub, which was strange.

When I try to log in directly, I get this error message now: There have been too many failed sign in attempts. To get help, please visit att.com/myatt and use Forgot user ID or Forgot password links. CARE CODE: 205.2 [LU003]

Then, when I try the "Forget Password" link, I get this error message: "Something's gone wrong. Please refresh the page and try again."

I'm not sure what is going on. The subaccount is still listed with all the accounts, but I can't edit it, or any of my other subaccounts.

Any thoughts of how to fix this or is there a chat or number I can call to talk this out or walk me through this? Thanks.

How do you get this fixed to be able to use the e-mail account?  It's been weeks.  The e-mail works on the android phone app.  Shows this error on the computer every time.

Looks like you’ve tried to sign in unsuccessfully too many times. Recover your ID or reset your password to continue.

Go here and fill out the form.

They seem very good at calling you back within 24-48 hours and getting it taken care of.

Also, make sure your 'recovery email' is one you have access to and ask them to set it up for you.

I had it happen 3x in the past few months, the last time  they got my recovery email changed and now I can "fix" it myself!

AT&T PLEASE FIX THIS ISSUE!!  I'm locked out again!! So sick and tired of this it ridiculous!!!   Worked for about 2 months and then locked out again across all my web browsers!!  Never once got a message saying I had entered an invalid password just BOOM locked out!!

My email clients on devices continue to work just fine, it's the web pages that are all locked out!

REFERENCE CARE CODE 205.2 and the AT&T Message: Your email is locked out after too many failed attempts and have to wait 24 hours before trying to sign in again.

I believe that I know the root cause of problem and the fix.

MY SCENARIO: I have an AT&T email account that I access through Microsoft Outlook 10 via my desktop PC, AT&T Yahoo Webmail via my browser (mail.yahoo.com), and my mobile phone app via iPhone.

==

THE PROBLEM: I get error code 202.5 on my Yahoo Webmail about every 5 weeks and I cannot access my email via my browser. However, my email still works on my PC and Mobile phone.

THE ROOT PROBLEM: I believe the problem is generated from Webmail and that somehow, somewhere, there is an ATT parameter that only allows Webmail logon for a specific timeframe, which seems to be about 5 weeks. After that, it requires a “refresh” of your password to reset that parameter. This is done by creating a new password, although you can use your existing password instead of making up a new one during the “create a new password” process.

From my experience, the fixes Tech Support offered do not work. The browser cache does not need to be cleared, and you do not need to wait 24 hours to use your Webmail again, because even if you do this, the problem doesn’t go away.

It took me many days/hours of frustration to find the answer, which I did on this forum, and to come up with a process where I can get my email running again. Now I can fix the problem in less than 10 minutes and be on my way. As much as I’d like ATT to fix this problem, I recall the prayer, “Accept the things you cannot change and have the wisdom to know the difference.”

==

THE FIX: The short answer is to create a new ATT password, however, you can just enter your existing password during this process. Then update your Outlook and Mobile phone too. Here’s the process that works for me.

CREATE A NEW ATT EMAIL PASSWORD (YOU CAN ENTER YOUR CURRENT PASSWORD)
1. From ATT Webmail Screen on your Browser, click [Forgot Password].
This takes you ATT.com, or you can just go there directly.

  1. From ATT.com, log on and click [Forgot Your password]
Fill out the screen to reset your password.

  1. Enter your User Id (which is your email address) and your last name.

  1. In the box “Create New Password” and “Confirm Password”, [ENTER YOUR CURRET PASSWORD]
That’s right folks, you do not need to enter a new password (although you can if you want to).

At this point, your AT&T Webmail will work. Send yourself a test message to verify.

But now you need to update your Microsoft Outlook and Mobile Phone passwords.

==

UPDATE MICROSOFT OUTLOOK
Even if your Outlook email works for a minute, it will soon stop. You need to create a new password by entering a Secure Mail Key in the password prompt.

  1. While you are in your account at ATT.Com, Get a secure mail key.
    a) Att.com
  2. b) Profile/Manage Secure Mail Key
  3. c) If there is already a Secure Mail Key number listed, delete it.
  4. d) Click [Add a New One]
  5. e) Copy the new Secure Mail Key number

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook
  2. a) Click [File/Account Setting/Update Password
  3. b) Paste the Secure Mail Key number in the text box that appears.

At this point, your Microsoft Outlook will work. Send yourself a test message to verify.

But now you need to update your Mobile Phone. I only know the instructions for Iphone.

UPDATE MOBILE PHONE

  1. When I tried to use my ATT email on my iPhone, it gave me an update page. I followed the prompts, then it looked like the iPhone was communicating with ATT.com, probably getting the OK that the password had been refreshed (the little circle was twirling). Then it was done.

At this point, your iPhone email worked.

This same issue (marked as ”Resolved” 8 months ago) is back again.

The same error code (CARE CODE: 205.2) continues to pop up every time I’ve attempted to log in to my AT&T Account the past few days.

I’ve attempted to log in on multiple devices – all ending up with the same Error code outcome:

- iPhone 13 running iOS 15.5

- iPad 7 running iOS 15.5

- (attempted login in Safari and Chrome apps on both devices)

CARE CODE: 205.2 [LU003]

So I called in to the 877-285-0117 prompt 2 and they walked me through resetting my account.  Even though earlier in the week I had reset my password 3 times using the my.att.net site they claim my password had NOT been reset in the database since April.

Here is how we were able to fix my account (despite clearing cookies, cache, etc. that didn't work)

Start a new Incognito tab in Chrome or other browser to turn off all tracking and cookies.

Go to att.com/my and it should ask you for your login and then select Forget Password

On this attempt it actually did reset my password in their 'database'

Same problem. I first noticed the issue when trying to delete messages from my sbcglobal.net inbox through eM Client. That mail client will allow me to delete those messages but they come right back within a few seconds. Every time I try to login to the online mail server via Yahoo mail I get the same error code as everyone else and on the first login attempt. The only way I can then access the online mail server is by changing my password but doing that means I also have to change the password within the mail client. It's an endless loop. Not cool. The only solution I see is to stop using Yahoo mail and switch all my accounts to Outlook.

I just had it happen to me again,  but my method for regaining access still worked for me about 4 times now in the past year.  I posted about it 9 months ago but will post it here again in case anyone wants to try it.

For those of you that are having this issue,  give this a try.  And it maybe even better by trying this using an Incognito window in Chrome,  or in Firefox use a New Private Window.   Here's what i did below :

When i got the message that i've had too many sign in attempts,  I clicked "Forgot Password",  then they texted me a 6-digit code to my cell phone as my temporary password.

I then entered that 6-digit code in the field,  then it prompted me to enter my new password twice,  but instead of creating a new password,  i

just typed in my normal password that i'd already been using for years and it accepted it (it did not make me change it),  then i was able to log in to my att.net email normally using my existing password.
