I'm having the exact same problem. This is a coincidence that I happened to check to see if I could recover my first email address growing up (which was @bellsouth.net) .
Because we were bellsouth customers for such a long time, I used this account for everything as a kid.
I followed all of the support articles I've unearthed.
What it is coming down to is that it says my password is wrong when I try to log in to the email page (from every possible browser).
https://login.yahoo.com/?.partner=sbc&.intl=us&nr=1&.done=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.yahoo.com%2F
I am able to reset my password with my recovery questions successfully. I can't get into my mailbox, however.
I am able to log in and view all of the stuff on the page https://www.att.com/my/#/accountOverview
I have tried using a mail client, as well as all browsers.
If anyone can help recover my old account, I will reward you with 100 bucks.
If there's any one at bellsouth who can help me, that would be awesome, but I don't expect a company to provide support for a free account (which came with my ISP at the time). I am able to prove ownership/etc how ever possible if the mailbox is still there.

Not sure if you ever resolved accessing your Bellsouth email account. If not there may be hope for you. The only problem that might be an issue with your account, it appears you haven’t used yours in years. It is my understanding some inactive accounts do get deleted. My Bellsouth email I have been using but mysteriously the password wasn’t being recongnized and resetting never worked.
Call 800-288-2020 and do whatever you have to get them to connect you to Technical Support. Mind you it took me over 11 hours, 20 to 30 different calls/folks, talking to Tech Support numerous times and various weblinks…. finally about 11pm CST I got to a real person who restored my Bellsouth email access.
However, you can short the laborious process I experienced by telling them you have an “old Bellsouth account you can’t access and need to talk to Tech Support” once you get to Tech Support ask the person if they have any knowledge working and restoring old bellsouth.net accounts. If they don’t answer right away they know about these type of accounts and can help, you will go round and round only to get no help. That was when I kept calling and getting different folks. So, just ask them if they can transfer you to another tech and mention the name Bea and that you know for fact as of 7/28/2020 a person posted Bea in Tech Support resolve this issues for a user.
If you successfully get a knowledgeable person, they can literally accomplish in 10 minutes getting your email access via att.com sign in.
Once I explained to Bea I had an old Bellsouth email and didn’t have account, she ask for info…. what name was it under, the address that was associated to it and zip and my SS# and the email ID and I think I had to give her my 30+ years ago old landline #. At any rate, Bea found my info and was able to give me a temporary password and via ATT.COM she had me click on sign-in… key my email id then the temp passcode. Once I hit enter it took me to the prompt to change the password and “bam” I was in my email account.
Hope this will help you or anyone else who is having this problem and save time. I basically decided I would wear out calling ATT until I could connect to someone who could resolve my issue.

I've been getting my bellsouth email through my outlook. But I want to go directly into my bellsouth account. I've been having problems getting into the bellsouth account directly. If I go under yahoo and"check mail". using my current user and password. For some reason it is not recognizing the password cause all I get is a blank page that says "logout sucessful". Not sure why that is. I need help please.

Thanks to TCB for writing up my recent experience with this problem. I spread my 11 hours over many mornings as I kept getting locked out and had to wait again and again to try again. Finally one tech was able to get the bellsouth specialists to send me a reset that got me in.
but I truly cannot add it to my Mac mail app anymore. I can get a smk for mailspring but mail app goes to the double triple log in thing that ends up asking for a new password. Well y’all, you need to know that if you do that, you’ve changed your password totally. And if you have linked your accounts under Att.com, you’ve reset the pw for all your mail accounts.
and that, ATT, is the (Edited per community guidelines) of much of my problems. Once you decide to create a unified account there, all the linked accounts are under that password for that email account. Oh, and then they will tell you that you need to set a “personal password” to get your email. Good luck with that.
I still cannot find a way to get mac mail app to allow me a sign in to either of my 25 yr old totally-necessary-to-access accounts.
webmail works but I can’t work this way. Please ATT. WTHeckola. Help please.
