Email to Setup Password Recovery Option for AT&T Email

Got an email asking for password recovery options for my AT&T email account - or else!  I have an sbcglobal.net email account, and a yahoo.com email account.  I have no idea if this is legit or what I am supposed to do, and if this is even applicable for me.  I don't like the "or else" part, so can someone give me some guidance?  Thank you!

Thanks for the update, @nan2confuzed.

You should be able to use a non-AT&T wireless number to complete the recovery process. If you're unable to use your phone number, you may want to try using a relative or close friends' number instead.

Let us know if you have any other questions!

Using someone else's ATT phone number is something that may finally work. Waiting to see results before I try it for my similar issue of 4 months. ..but it goes against the principles of security authentication as it involves a third party, but when all else fails....

I got the email to setup my password recovery, but ATT.com keeps passing me into Directv and thus a major loop with no way into my ATT account.

Also, a while back I tried to set this up but it would only accept an AT&T wireless number.   If that is still the case then this request is meaningless.

Can't ATT write decent software?

We apologize for this inconvenience and would like to help you update your email security options, @myhategrows.

You can follow these steps on how to update your security question:

  1. Go to Profile and then Sign-in info.
  2. In the Online security questions section, select Change security questions.
  3. Complete and save your security questions and answers.

Here are some additional steps on adding a non AT&T wireless phone number to your recovery options:

  1. Go to Profile, then Contact info.
  2. On the Phone tab, select Edit in the Billing phone numbers section.
  3. Enter your wireless number as the primary or secondary number.
  4. Check the box next to Use this number to recover your user ID or reset your password.
  5. Select Save.
  6. Complete any confirmation steps sent to your wireless number within 24 hours. Text message rates and other charges may apply. Check with your plan and provider.

Please reach back out, and let us know if this helps.

Great information and I would love to try it.

But I need to solve the first issue:  ATT keeps sending me to Directv every time I try to click on my profile.  I cannot get to the profile to update it.

Hello, myhategrows.

As you mentioned earlier, an AT&T wireless number is still required to set up the recovery options.

If you have access to one (through a trusted friend or family member) and would like to proceed, let us know, and we'll work on adding the recovery information for you.

When I click on the link UPDATE MY PROFILE it shows my email account unverified. When I click on the link to verify my email it shows it will send me a CODE to identify that it is me BUT I NEVER GET A CODE.  This particular email is a sub-account of my primary email account linked to my AT&T Account. Is this why?

I waited a very long time on DM and no response.  I also have an issue with using an AT&T wireless number as a recovery tool. I do not use AT&T wireless and do not know anyone that does.  My main email account recovery was setup with my wireless number and my husband's wireless number - neither are AT&T wireless.  This seems likes a huge mess to me.  I still need to know how to verify my recovery email in my sub-account email as I am still now receiving the code required to identify myself.  I do not have hours to hold on phone or wait for DM.  Can someone help me??

CLAUDDEN - What is the AT&T phone number that you called? I need it as I am getting no where on this Forum or DM. And cannot get anyone on the phone number I am using either.

Given all of the scam and phishing emails and messaging received, I too was amazed that AT&T would send an email such as the one being discussed here.

How the heck is one supposed to know what is valid and not.  I did hover over the links and I was fairly certain they and thus, the email was valid.  But fairly certain is not 100%.  It is all but impossible to be 100% certain and for lots of folks, they don't have a clue how to discern the valid from the invalid.  What a cluster, when it comes to security!!

One way to confirm an email notification came from AT&T, would be to have the email to advise us to log into our email address, and view the notification(s) there.  That would be essentially 100% safe.

As a side note:

I have 3-ATT.net emails addresses.  When I tried to verify one of my email addresses with a cell phone number, I received the following error message:

"That number is already linked to another user ID. Choose another number."

Well of course my phone number is linked to another ID!  How can I link 3-email addresses with 1-phone number!?!  I can't!  Perfectly poor problem solving by AT&T.  How about MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) AT&T, using an authenticator App ?

I did make sure my security questions were updated and correct.  I hope that's all that is needed!  It was good of AT&T to throw-out an email that had no applicability in the case, because I have 3-ATT.net email addresses.  BTW AT&T, I can't do as the email advises -- i.e., update my profile for the email address that I was advised to, if doing that means the use of a phone number.  Well I suppose if my primary email address is validated using my phone number, perhaps the secondary 2-email addresses are also, if I had to confirm with a rep.  In my case, I haven't clue how things work, or don't!!  And it is ludicrous to have to come to a forum like this and try to find out what is real and what is not, when the majority of customers will never make it here!

I received an e-mail indicating that I need to update my account recovery information for my sbcglobal.net e-mail account.

I had no difficulty adding a recovery e-mail and security questions.

However, I am unable to add my cell phone number since my mobile service is provided by T-Mobile.

Any advice?

I'm being told to update my profile.  I put in my "recovery" phone number and was told that since it isn't an AT&T account, they will not accept it.  Now what?

Ditto to janeellen2820.  What are we supposed to enter without an AT&T Wireless phone number?  I keep asking, and the responses have not been helpful.  I don't have anybody's AT&T Wireless phone number to "borrow"!!
