Care Code 201

Over the past months accessing ATT (sbcglobal.net) email via a browser has been extremely frustrating.  The problems began with Care Code 205.  After several infuriating days of unsuccessful login attempts, I came across a post by ATTChrisZ on the AT&T Community Forums with instructions on how to “work around” the issue.  Now, I’m getting Care Code 201 when logging in from an android phone.  The password reset “fix” does NOT work for Care Code 201.  Restarting the phone, closing the browser and opening a new session, installing the Yahoo Mail app…NOTHING helps.  Now what???

Hey @cal2022! We understand your frustration and how important it is to have access to your email service.

We would suggest clearing the cache and cookies from the device you are using as this can assist with the password issue that you keep experiencing. Also, you can update your security question and answers in case you forget your password and need to login.

Do you receive the Care Code 201 on any other device? We just want to confirm that it's not happening on one device and it's not a device issue.

Please let us know if the above steps helped.

Thank you for responding so quickly.

The browser cache was cleared prior to my post.

Security questions are not an issue, I know the answers.

I only receive the Care Code 201 on the android phone.

Thanks

Let's check your email out together, @cal2022.

We suggest checking your device for OAuth compatibility. It's AT&T's open authentication security feature. Your device, or your device's OS version may not be compatible.

We also recommend creating a Secure Mail Key. Doing so will authenticate with the Secure Mail Key, removing the need for OAuth compatibility.

  1. Go to Profile and choose Sign-in info.
  2. Select the email account that needs a secure mail key. (You’ll find a menu at the top if you have multiple accounts.)
  3. Scroll to Secure mail key and select Manage secure mail key.
  4. Choose the email address that you’d like to use, if you have more than one.
  5. Select Add secure mail key and then enter a nickname for the secure mail key to make it easier to recognize.
  6. Choose Create secure mail key.
  7. Select Copy secure mail key to clipboard. Make a note of your secure mail key, so you have it handy if you need to update an email app on several devices.
    • For security purposes, the secure mail key only displays until you select OK
    • If you lose or forget the secure mail key, you can create new secure mail keys.
  8. Select OK.
  9. Go to your preferred email app and replace the existing password with your secure mail key. For an IMAP account, delete the existing password for both the IMAP and SMTP servers and replace them with your secure mail key.

Please let us know if these steps work, we may need to reset your password manually.

Thank you, I appreciate all help and suggestions.

Outlook is the mail client I use on my laptop and desktop so a Secure Mail Key was generated several months ago.  I’ll install the Yahoo Mail app again and try using the Key rather than the password.

Sorry, but ignore ATTHelp.  They toss out generic boilerplate answers that are confusing because they are confused about what does what.

The Yahoo Mail app does NOT use the SMK, it uses the regular password, same as the website.

I downloaded the Yahoo Mail app to my android phone, used the Secure Mail Key rather than a password but received the same Care Code 201 message.

Being annoyed, I deleted the Yahoo app and restarted the phone.

I tried the web browser again and it worked perfectly.  The Care Code 201 did NOT appear and all mail folders displayed.  I do not know how the problem resolved, but it matters not.  For now, mail works on my phone and that's a good thing.

@cal2022 This worked for me! I have been avoiding reading email on my phone because of the constant need to create a "new" password every time I changed devices. I'll give it a day or two to be sure this workaround will fix the issue. Thanks for sharing.
