Cannot access att.net e-mail via POP3 or IMAP

My att.net e-mail stopped working about two weeks ago.  I can access e-mail via the web client but not with Outlook.  I contacted Support and was told to use the following:

-----------------------------------------------------------

[Support] : Complete the Server Information:
Account Type - Select IMAP or POP3.
Incoming mail server - Enter imap.mail.att.net (IMAP) or inbound.att.net (POP3).
Outgoing mail server - Enter smtp.mail.att.net (IMAP) or outbound.att.net (POP3).

[Support] : Complete the Logon Information:
User Name - Enter your full email address.
Password - Enter or paste your secure mail key.
Check Remember password and Require logon using Secure Password Authentication.

[Support] : Select More Settings.
Complete Outgoing Server info:
Check My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.

[Support] : Complete Advanced info:
Incoming server - Enter 993 (IMAP) or 995 (POP3).
Use the following type of encrypted connection - Choose SSL.
Outgoing server - 465 (IMAP and POP3).
Use the following type of encrypted connection- Choose SSL.
Select OK and then Next. Outlook will test your account info. If everything passes, select Finish.
-----------------------------------------------------------

These settings matched what I had setup already.  After much frustration and gyrations, I finally deleted the account entirely and recreated it.  Now it's telling me that my credentials are invalid although I know that's not the case.  How does one go about resetting the password for a POP3 account?

Hey @jilted_nTX, youve come to the right place for this.

We recommend setting up a Secure Mail Key. You’ll still use the same password for your AT&T Mail account in OAuth-compatible apps, myAT&T, and other AT&T products like currently.com and webmail. When you change your AT&T email password, you won’t need to get a new secure mail key.

Let's get you pointed in the right direction for help with your email, @ramfan7!

If you're able to successfully access your email via Currently, we'd suggest that you contact Microsoft Outlook support for further assistance. They are best equipped to help with their product.

In the event that you're unable to access your email via Currently, please let us know. Since it's supported by AT&T, we've got the resources to assist with that platform.

Thank you for contacting the AT&T Community Forums!

@ATTHelp This is not a Microsoft / Outlook issue.  I use outlook for 10 other POP3 and IMAP e-mail accounts without issue.  I have been using it for this att.net account for literally almost 20 years.  Something has changed on the mail server and it is now rejecting my (perfectly valid) credentials.  I think the first step is to reset my POP3 password, but I don't know how / where to do that.  I need a reset POP3 password link.

Hi there, jilted_nTX. Let's look into your concern further with regard to your email.

We recommend accessing your email using Currently, which is our official server used. If you are able to access your email through Currently, you may need to contact Microsoft Office Support for the proper assistance.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

I can't access my email account at Currently and when I try to reset the password it will only send a pass-code to an old phone number that I no longer have. Neither the phone or phone number? It will not except my security questions either. HELP!!!!

So what I'm getting is that AT&T no longer supports POP3 or IMAP.  Accessing webmail via Currently means nothing -- that's an entirely different way of sending and receiving e-mail.  Mail clients that send/receive via POP3 or IMAP are no longer supported is what you're telling me, correct?  Why can you not tell me how to reset my POP3 password?  The POP3 password is not the same as is used to log into mail.yahoo.com using a browser.

What, exactly, do you expect me to ask Microsoft?  Should I ask them why AT&T is rejecting my POP3 credentials?  And how will they respond to that question?  Their response will be, "Call AT&T support and ask them how to reset your password.  This is an issue on the mail server or your credentials have been changed."

Creating a new Secure Mail Key seems to have worked.  Thanks for finally answering my question.  AT&T really should send out notifications before they make changes to the authentication method.  And, after having done so, the Support staff needs to be alerted so they have answers on things like this.

Thanks again.

Suddenly yesterday, my att.net email pop3 stopped working after I got a persistant Yahoo popup requiring sign in .

I did that, and it changed my settings to yahoo.

I changed them back to the official settings:

inbound.att.net 995   & outbound.att.net 465

The outbound works, but the inbound still doesn't work.
