Missing emails in Windows 10 Mail on Yahoo Mail account
In the recent weeks, while Yahoo Mail is working as expected in browser, there are serious problems with Windows 10 Mail configured with YM account. The latter shows only some selected emails, totally hiding others. Such as, in browser I see 15 emails today in the inbox, while in Windows 10 Mail only 3. It's all synchronized and some of the emails that are visible are very recent; but it does not show older emails that are visible in browser. Nothing like that happens with GMail and Office365 accounts I also have configured in Windows Mail, on those accounts every email is visible. I already tried to delete and recreate Yahoo Mail account, more than once, but the problem comes back.

I can confirm this is an issue with Mail and Yahoo/AT&T.
This is the first I'd seen of the partial download issue. For about the last week or so there's been an issue with Mail not being able to display some emails correctly, they open to what appears to be some sort of raw code, not quite ones just missing the HTML wrapper. That's been discussed here in a couple of threads and a couple on Microsoft's forum.
It seemed like this was a Yahoo issue at first and people also reported it happening to AOL emails coming into Windows Mail (Yahoo and AOL share the same infrastructure). Given the 7 or 8 other bizarro things happening with AT&T emails lately, it just seemed like one more glitch to add to the list.
But I saw where some on the Microsoft forum were saying Mail might have gotten an update around the same time frame. So it's not clear who is to blame at this point.
I saw your post and did a test setup with Mail and my att.net account. It pulled a grand total of one email even though there are plenty in the Inbox. That one email was the Yahoo notice saying there had been a new sign in (triggered when I set up the test).
So it's not you or your setup, but it's unclear who to point fingers at.

In my experience, if I remove Yahoo account and re-add it to Windows Mail, it initially pulls all emails. But later, new emails are shown only selectively.

Yeah, even that isn't consistent. Yesterday when I used a VM to test Mail with, I only got one email on the first attempt. I didn't remove the account to see what would happen.
So I just booted a new VM, added the account and got 3 emails (all older than the one that appeared yesterday). I deleted the account, added it back in again and.......3 emails.
I was able to determine that Mail got an update dated 6/2/22 so it's entirely possible that the update broke something and it's not Yahoo/AOL. While I would have expected to see more forum traffic before last week, maybe the update didn't roll out to everyone until a week or two after the update.

I was thinking about specifying Yahoo account as just any IMAP one, avoiding all this trickery with webmail, but if I understand correctly, to use that I have to generate application password in Yahoo Mail; but when I went to my profile/security, I have not found application passwords - the only text there is "This is how you sign in currently: password". So I wonder if application password feature is elsewhere, or it had been discontinued.

To use most email clients with any AT&T-based email account you need to create a Secure Mail Key and use that string every place the client wants a password. You still use the "normal" password if you log in with a web browser.
The SMK is similar to what Yahoo has for yahoo.com customers (that special application password) who want to use a client.

Thanks, that worked, and I was able to add IMAP account successfully; will see if the problem is gone. Next problem however: IMAP setup is only for the mail. How to add Calendar and Contacts ?
Remarkably, sync settings for IMAP server in Windows Mail don't have the option to download new emails as they arrive. I guess, Microsoft programmers are not aware that IMAP can "push" new mail.

I sent this problem to "Microsoft feedback hub" from Windows, with the subject "Yahoo mail - only few emails are fetched" . Maybe you could vote for it. Two votes probably won't make big difference, but it's still more than one.

Voted up your post, along with a few others all related to Yahoo Mail.
On the Calendar/Contacts thing, I presume you have those two items enabled, right?
Regardless, those things seem like they're also having issues based on the posts in the feedback hub.
Makes me wonder if this is all futile. Microsoft has made noises that Mail will be replaced some time this year.

Just discovered yet another "feature", when YM in Windows Mail is configured as IMAP account. Some (but not all) HTML emails appear as their HTML text. This was never seen when YM was configured "natively", i.e. as webmail.

Yeah, that's been reported in a few threads here, starting about two weeks ago. It is also in a couple of topics on the Microsoft Community forum.
HERE is one of the links to this forum about it.
That's one of the other topics on the Feedback Hub that I mentioned I voted up.
