Emails w/ blank return address

Is there any way to block/delete emails that come from senders with NO email address?

Hey there @BigB216. We'd be happy to help you block those unwanted emails.

We would suggest that you try these stops to block an email address.

  • Sign into your AT&T email account.
  • Select the gear icon, and then select settings from the top-right corner of the page.
  • Select Banned Addressess from the left-hand menu.
  • Enter the address you'd like to block in the Add an address field.
  • Select the ban button and then select Save. This email address is now block, and you will not be able to receive email messages from that address.

When you block an email address, your AT&T email account will automatically delete messages sent to you from that account.

Let us know if those steps help.

There’s no address in the “From” field - all that show up is a name, for example “Walmart.com <>” in a current instance…

I'm moving this whole thread to the Email forum.

@BigB216   I presume you're asking about your Yahoo/AT&T email account.  This has been a popular question recently and I've yet to see anyone come up with a way to do it. I've never gotten one like that to test with but the supplied Filter options are not very extensive.  The most obvious one off the top of my head is one that uses the  "does not contain" option and have it look for the @ symbol.  But someone must have tried that before and yet no success stories.

If Yahoo ever turns their server-side spam filters back on, perhaps it won't matter that you can write your own filter.

Thank you for that information, @BigB216!

Can you please inform us what email client you are using to access your email? Such as Outlook, Apple Mail, or Yahoo. We are asking so that we can provide steps to apply a filter to deter the emails.

Let us know so we can provide those steps!

I use an iPhone to get my emails. I’ve also recently used Safari to login and try to use the filters…

Thanks for letting us know, @BigB216!

Did using the filters work for you?

While you let us know that, feel free to forward any suspicious emails to us by using abuse@att.net.

We look forward to hearing back!

What filter would I use? All of the addresses are blank - they’ll appear as “Ace Hardware <>” or similar. What should I enter as the sender address?

Also, what’s weird is some of the messages go to my Junk Mail box…

Hi, BigB216.

If you're unable to block the emails or forward them to us, you'll want to try tonydi's suggestion to create a filter using the Does not contain option and have it look for the @ symbol.

Follow these steps to create and manage filters from our article on reporting and filtering spam:

  1. Select the gear Gear icon and then More Settings.
  2. Choose Filters.
  3. Select Add to create a filter.
  4. Enter the conditions for your filter and then select Save.

We'll be sure to pass along your feedback about this matter and look into making this an easier process. If you need assistance with anything else, don't hesitate to reach back out and let us know.

Thank you for visiting the AT&T Community Forums.

Ok - I’ll try that and let you know what happens. I forwarded a bunch of messages on earlier.

I do not see this as an option. Do I need to “upgrade” my account?

These are the steps for Currently, BigB216. If you're using a different mail client, you'll need to look up the steps to create a filter.

I’ve forwarded 116 emails to the spam address listed above this AM. All of these messages have come since noon EST on Sat . I’ll look again at the steps above to see if I can do anything.

@BigB216   Save the effort, just delete them.  Yahoo/AT&T doesn't need anyone to forward those emails, they know exactly what is landing on their servers.  That whole process is designed for the oddball one-off problems that people might run into.

Besides, there have been a lot of people forwarding those emails during the spam floods and, as you can see, that has done sooooo much to stop them.  🙄
