ATT.net Email connectivity issues

This problem is apparently widespread and ATT is doing nothing to fix it. I cannot use my att.net email on my home/work laptop because it is completely unreliable. It either won't connect for hours on end or once it finally does connect, the connection is severed: red alert/warning pop-up says No Internet Connection which is blatantly untrue because I can access countless other sites and the signal is fine. I have just written a long work email and the signal drops, the email is lost; I can't even go to drafts to copy it and send from Gmail. This problem is with ATT/Yahoo, mail.yahoo.com.

The problem is not with my laptop. I have checked firewalls (that wouldn't be the problem because eventually it connects), I have cleared cache and cookies; I have used other browsers. Nothing fixes the problem! I have spent an hour on the phone with ATT Tech support and no fix. The problem is not with my internet connection, the problem is with mail.yahoo.com.

The problem is with ATT/Yahoo, not my laptop. ATT is doing nothing to fix the problem!

We're here to help with getting you reconnected to your email, @jatyler.

We understand how frustrating it can be not having full access to your email. Given the troubleshooting you've already done, there are a few things we'd like you to check:

  • Are you having this issue only specifically on your home/work computer, or are any other devices affected? Knowing this can help us narrow down what's causing the issue.
  • Are you using a VPN service when using your email? If so, this could also be another potential reason you're getting disconnected.
  • How are you connecting to your email? Are you using a third party app/email client, or are you using our webmail service Currently? Knowing this can also help with narrowing down where the problem is stemming from.

We look forward to hearing back from you!

Hi Jarod, my laptop is the only device affected, Dell XPS new in fall 2021. I use ATT internet in my home/office with an ATT installed router model #BGW210.-700

It sounds like you're doing email via the currently.com webmail login.  Have you given thought to switching to an email client, which theoretically shouldn't suffer from the disconnect issues?   I'd recommend Thunderbird if you want a full featured client.  It uses OAuth2 so no need for a Secure Mail Key for things like Outlook that don't support OAuth2 yet.

Do NOT try Windows Mail.  Microsoft apparently borked it with a recent update and it has major issues with Yahoo-based email.

Thanks Tonydi,, Thunderbird sounded like a great solution. I downloaded and tried to set it up, got my configuration, clicked "DONE" but for the last 20 minutes it's been "Checking password". Hmmm.

Did you use manual or let it automatically try and set up the account?

Do you know if it's trying to set up the account as POP3 or IMAP?

If IMAP, did it present you with the AT&T login dialog where you entered the regular password?

I tried both automatic setup and manual. With automatic, it gave the available configuration for incoming as POP3. When I click Done it endlessly goes into "checking password."

Ok, I got it to work.  ^@(%(#(^*))^ Yahoo apparently didn't fix the server certificates that were broken weeks ago.

Do a manual config, select IMAP and use these server names...

imap.mail.yahoo.com and port 993

smtp.mail.yahoo.com and port 465

You may have to click the retry button but it should get you the green bar that indicates you're good to go.

Then pull down the Authentication method drop downs and change to OAuth2 for both servers.  Click Done

Then you'll get a popup window that will be a Yahoo sign-in dialog.  Input the email address and once it figures out that it's an AT&T account, the AT&T login box will appear (mine didn't even display AT&T but I recognized the box from using currently.com).  Enter your address and password and you should be good to go.

Easy peasy, no?   🙄

(This procedure should also work with POP3 using pop.mail.yahoo.com and port 995 and smtp.mail.yahoo.com and port 465)

Here's what my Thunderbird IMAP setup looked like when I was done.

Well, after numerous tries, Uninstalling and re-downloading, I finally got the Yahoo dialog box and I'm in!

Now I will give Thunderbird a try. Thanks for your considerable help and support!

Glad to hear it!   It's SO infuriating how many hoops users are having to jump through because Yahoo can't get its act together.
