Thunderbird will not access outbound server

The message could not be sent using SMTP server outbound.att.net for an unknown reason. Please verify that your SMTP server settings are correct and try again, or contact your network administrator.

This normally happens because you've chosen the default port of 25 when connecting to the SMTP server.  By default, U-verse blocks port 25 to protect against SPAM bots.  The easiest thing to do is see if your SMTP server will accept another port (likely requiring either encryption or authentication or both).  AT&Ts SMTP servers do.

 

See the table at the link below for the port.  I think you'll find you want port 465 and encryption on.
