Spam all of a sudden
A year ago we moved to an area where AT&T did not cover with U-Verse. Now they are here, so we left Brighthouse, and signed up for U-Verse because we get what we want for a better price.
That is the good news.
The bad news is that since we signed up with AT&T we have started getting loads of spam: the usual junk stuff from Nigeria, and all the 'Dear One... blah blah blah' ones, plus others. For one whole year with Brighthouse we never got one single spam with the exact same (gmail) e-mail address! WHY? What do AT&T do with our e-mail addresses that opens them up as carrion for these spam vultures?
Is there anything we can do to stop the spam? We do not want to change our e-mail address. Our e-mail address isn't even a name that a computer can home in on; it's kinda cryptic. So... WHY the spam all of a sudden?
Please help!

AT&T isn't selling your e-mail or anything like that. Are you sure you just didn't visit a couple shady websites or picked up some type of computer infection recently?
Once spam begins, there's not really any way to really stop it.

definitely NEVER visit 'shady websites'! The spam I am getting is the same
sort of junk that we used to get before we changed our e-mail address to
what it is now. Like I said in my post on the Community Forum, we never had
a single spam, NOT ONE!! in the year we were with Windstream, and then we
moved to Brighthouse, and NOT ONE spam while we were with them either.
Another 'side effect' of our new AT&T account, is a new rash of
telemarket calls to our new phone #. AT&T couldn't give us our old phone
number for some reason, so all these people think we are new residents, and
are trying to sell us security systems, house insurance, and all kinds of
other stuff.
Very annoying. As a last resort we will just have to change our e-mail
address.
Thanks for your suggestions, though. We appreciate your interest and
help.

I can appreciate your frustration. We never used to get SPAM either......well maybe once in a while.....but not as much as we get now. But we've been with U-verse for 7 years. In our case I let my grandchildren talk me into acquiring a FaceBook account so I could keep in easy touch with them. THAT was a mistake. Almost instantly we started to drown in SPAM. Fortunately the Yahoo/AT&T E-mail service does a pretty good job of filtering it out and routing it into the SPAM folder where I delete it with just a couple clicks. But once in a while one will sneak through into our In-box. Then I just move it over to the Spam folder that seems to take care of it.....for the most part.
Before we came over to U-verse....we were with Comcast. I really don't remember if we got much SPAM there or not. I'm getting old. Memory is getting bad.
