How do I delete/deactivate an sbcglobal.net email account?

I have an old (15 years +) sbcglobal email account that only gets spam these days and I've long since been using a different email service as my primary. I want to delete the sbcglobal account because it was part of a data breach not too long ago and even after changing the password, I don't trust it. Sbcglobal is no longer around obviously and as I understand it, Yahoo purchased sbcglobal and then AT&T currently services these accounts. I've tried logging into Yahoo and AT&T to delete this account but there's no option to do that. Either through Yahoo or AT&T. I've called customer service with both companies. Yahoo refers me to AT&T and AT&T tells me there's only "self-help" options to delete these email accounts. The article which walks you through how to delete your AT&T email seems to apply to AT&T email accounts but not necessarily to old email accounts like sbcglobal.net which are only serviced by AT&T. This is the link I've tried: https://www.att.com/support/article/email-support/KM1010448/

I get hung up because on the AT&T Profile page after I log in, there's no section titled "Contact Info" and when I go through all the available links, there's nothing available to me about deleting or deactivating the account.

So apparently I'm stuck with it. This email address has been hacked before and even after explaining the security risk to AT&T and myself, they still have no viable solution to delete this email. Does anyone have experience deleting these accounts or is AT&T/Yahoo just woefully inadequate when it comes to servicing these accounts?

We are here to help you delete that email, eewinters59.

Is this email associated with an active service?

You can not delete your email if it is associated with an active service. Also, you will need to log into the primary email to be able to delete all of the emails that are associated with it.

Let us know more information, so we can better assist you.

Hi Marc, thanks for getting back to me.

It is not associated with an active service. I have an at&t wireless account but I have a different email associated with that account.

I should delete all the emails? Will this delete the account?

Hi, eewinters59.

If you delete all the emails then it will not affect your account, but you will need to keep the email that is tied to your wireless account. This is because you will need to log in to view your bills and other information.

Let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

My sbcglobal email is not associated with my at&t wireless service. This is the account I am wanting to delete but cannot.

I am not planning on deleting my separate (gmail) email that is associated with my at&t wireless service.

How can I delete my sbcglobal email now that I’ve confirmed it is not associate with any active other service?

The phone number you left for me in the DM doesn't work, it just redirects me to hang up and try a different phone number.

For future reference for other people who have this same problem, after spending a couple of weeks and going through many iterations of customer service representatives I've learned a few things that may be helpful:

These sbcglobal.net accounts are technically serviced by AT&T but they weren't created in the AT&T system. So when you log in to your att.com profile for this account, it won't look like a normal AT&T "free email" account and their recipe/article won't work. Essentially their recommendation is to sign out of this email address from all devices (stop syncing to your phone as well), then wait 3 months. In my case, I get 10-20 spam emails sent to this account daily but they say this isn't counted as "activity" and after 3 months, the system will automatically delete the account if there aren't any sign ins (or even sign -in attempts).

Overall, it seems AT&T hasn't been given enough tools to service these accounts and that means it's very frustrating for those of us who waited too long to get gmail :)

The last customer service rep I talked to, Oscar, was fantastic and helpful and said he is escalating the issue to try to find a more reliable solution for these types of accounts. If anything changes, will someone post on this thread please? Thank you and here's to hoping my 20 year old email dies an ignominious death soon!

You have got to be kidding me. How in the world with the advances of technology can AT&T not be able to change the email associated with an active account (Member ID) regardless of when it was set up?

No idea but I’m baffled as well. My guess is these accounts are so few in number that it’s not worth att investing in the resources necessary to service them properly.
