Another thread asked how to delete all the emails in a yahoo webmail mailbox. I suggested the technique documented here. Assuming that actually works below is a possible extrapolation of that technique that I think might work to select a date range of a maibox instead of the entire mailbox.
Click the "All" at the left of the search box to display a drop down menu.
In that dropdown menu Select the mailbox you want to delete the emails from and then click "Advanced search" near the bottom of that menu.
In the advanced search box, in its Date box, select "Custom date...". Enter the "to" date in the indicated format. Leave the start date blank.
Click the "Search Mail" button.
Now the procedure should be the same as for selecting all emails in a mailbox, i.e., press Ctrl-A (Windows, Linux) or Command-A (Mac) to select all the messages and do the delete action from the toolbar.
I'm having trouble with finding "advanced search". I open mail using Safari and Yahoo mail OR Firefox and Outlook(combined email accounts). I don't have "All" option to the left of any search box.
Are you using the "basic" mail version format, i.e., do you see the sentence "Switch to the newest att.net Mail" near the top right? If so click it to use the "full featured" format. Your email web page will then display in the "full featured" format. Then the search box will have "All" at its left end and when you click it the "Advanced search" will be the last item at the bottom of the drop down menu.
If you ever want to switch back to the "basic" format of the webmail click the gear in the upper right to bring up it's drop down menu and then click settings. A pane will come up and near the bottom of that pane you will see the choice of "Mail version". Click the "basic" radio button and then click the "save" button at the bottom of the pane.
The OP asked the question on how to delete all emails prior to a certain date? If you want to delete all emails in a mailbox then the suggestion in this other thread apparently works. The OP for this thread has yet to come back with a followup on whether what I suggested works for what he is trying to do after he fixes his mail format to "full format".

You can delete multiple emails at a time without any hassle with the multiple emails deletion tool as well as there's also a manual option.
YOu can also use shortcut keys, press Shift + Delete keys together to delete all emails permanently.
