Deceased spouse managed out @swbell.net email addresses. How do I gain access to the account?

I'm asking this question on behalf of an elderly family friend that lost her husband last year.  She can still send and receive emails at her @swbell.net email address, but she doesn't know the account credentials (i.e. - password).  He was the account holder.  She's unable to add her @swbell.net email address to the Mail program of her new cell phone.  She has all the documentation (death certificate, will, etc) that AT&T might need to verify they can pass the account on to her, we just need to know what the procedure is/who to contact/etc.

Any assistance in pointing her in the right direction to get this handled would be greatly appreciated.

We can help your friend gain access to their late spouse's email account, MHhelp.

Since she doesn't know the password, a good place for her to start is to reset it with the Forgot password option in myAT&T.

Here are the steps:

  1. Go to att.com/myatt.
  2. Select Forgot password?
  3. Fill out the password info.
  4. Choose security questions or temporary password and follow the prompts. If you choose a temporary password, we’ll let you know where we sent it.
  5. Create your new password.

Once she's made the new password and signed in, she should be able to add the email account to the mail app on her phone. Also, when she's signed in, she can create or update the security questions and add a phone number for resets, in case she forgets the password.

We also suggest that she creates a secure mail key, so that she doesn't have to enter her password every time she signs in. She'll be able to access her AT&T mail using her favorite email app, and synchronize other account information, such as her calendar and contacts.

Let us know if this information helped, or if she still needs help accessing the email account.
