Closed email no longer accessible for my mother.

My mother is no longer able to access her email and in trying to help her I've discovered that this free email services was replaced with I know something was sent to her to inform her but it is likely she thought it was advertising and ignored. My 78-yr old mother is resistant to change and I would like to avoid making her move to another email platform like Yahoo. Is there any options to keep her email? even in a paid capacity? Also if she does have to move to the Yahoo/ platform does her email address change? What happens with anyone who emails her using the address - are the messages forwarded? thank you.
