AT&T.NET Email Access

Is it a requirement to change over from att.net to yahoo!mail?

There are no "requirements" on what email service you choose.  But if you are an att customer with a att email address and you also have or want to have a yahoo.com email address IMO that's just asking for trouble since the account handling for att users with yahoo accounts is problematic and tends to lead to problems.

But I thought I read that att.net is powered by Yahoo?

Yahoo is att email service provider and yahoo writes the code for att's webmail (and home page).  That's all.  But yahoo has their own subscribers distinct from att.  The fact that att accounts need to be processed in some way to access the yahoo managed servers is where the problems start.  Att account sort of straddle both yahoo and att and that's why it has become problematic.

Just what prompted your original question?  Are you interested in having a yahoo.com account in addition to your att account?  Did you get some email telling you need a yahoo account, in which case that was spam or phishing and should be ignored?
