0x800CCC0E Error- Outlook

First- I CAN connect to webmail and all settings are correct because I CAN receive email via outlook.  The problem is that it keeps dropping the connection/timing out/going to sleep throughout the day.  I work from home some days and see it happen all day long.  The only way I know I have new mail is my phone notification will go off...but nothing comes to outlook.

I've seen other posts on this but no answers/solutions.   I realize this is an issue with Outlook but it's an issue between Outlook AND AT&T because the mail IS flowing and does come through.  I just have to jump through hoops that I shouldn't have to in order to get mail to flow.

Outlook 2010.  Win10

  • I can log into webmail.
  • Have tried secure mail key (SMK)
  • Have verified all settings between outlook and ATT site multiple times, including all ports, SSL, etc. but this seems irrelevant because mail does come though.
  • I CAN receive mail via outlook...just not every time.
  • I have 2 other mail accounts in outlook (gmail and exchange account) and both work fine, every time, without fail.

If I close outlook, then re-open it, mail flows THE FIRST TIME.  After that, I have to repeat the above steps.

If I'm on my inbox and hit send/receive, I get the 0x800CCC0E error.  Mailbox shows disconnected.

If I change to a sub-folder inside of my inbox and hit send/receive, the mail flows.  A few minutes later, from my inbox...error

AT&T support wanted me to call Microsoft for help!?!?  (Gee...I wonder if I could ever get through...and if they'll say it's an AT&T issue???)

Have you googled 0x800CCC0E for possible suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?  Just a quick glance through some of them indicates possible causes.  Ones that stood out to me are PST file needs repair, anti-virus software may be interfering, and one of those google results mentioned increasing the server timeout settings.  I have my own  suspicions that the servers get overloaded and the wait time in the client needs to be increased.  That google searched turned up lots of results with other suggestions as well.

Aside from possible slow servers the problem lies on your end.  There is nothing in the POP/IMAP/SMTP protocols that indicates anything about which client is doing the exchange.  As long as it's a valid protocol exchange (within allotted time limits) the servers should be "happy".

Thank you.  I have done quite a bit of searching on this and tried a variety of steps but haven't fully documented everything as well as I'd like.  I did increase the wait time, incrementally, but have just pushed it all the way to the max (10 minutes) the error appears well before 10 minutes, though.  If I hit send/receive, it tries for about a minute and then throws the error.

Below are things in the article I've already tried...

Check the Internet Connection

Check the settings for the Email Account in Outlook  - numerous times

Delete email messages if they look suspicious

Check the antivirus application & disable it- AV and Malware tested.

Check firewall configurations-

Increase server timeout setting- set to 10 minutes (max)

Third party tools causing a problem (don't have any installed)

SMTP server settings- done multiple times and tested a few variants w/no success.

I'll work through the solutions in more detail and see if any of it helps.

Repair PST?  If you do that make a backup first.

I thought you are having fetch problems.  SMTP wouldn't have anything to do with that since that's only for sending.

The Tasks area of the Outlook Send/Receive Progress window always show:

Name              - Progress  - Remaining

My account    -  Completed - blank

Synchronizing subscribed folders...   - Errors  - blank

This is the error:
Task 'Synchronizing subscribed folders for Ron ATT.' reported error (0x800CCC0E) : 'Outlook cannot synchronize subscribed folders for Ron ATT. Error: Cannot connect to the server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

Additional question- any thoughts on why, when I'm on 'Inbox' I get the error, but if I select a sub-folder, inside of my Inbox, I do not get an error and it works.  The changing of folder seems to resolve it, although temporarily.

...but if I select a sub-folder, inside of my Inbox...

Maybe I should have asked way earlier, just how is you outlook configured, POP or IMAP?  As POP I suppose you can get away with anything you want as a folder structure inside your client.  But as IMAP I don't know what that means with the att/yahoo servers since normally you cannot have subfolders of the inbox.  Indeed you can't even create them in the webmail.  So I don't know how they map into the server structure and as mirrored in the webmail.

Sorry...have been out of town.

It's IMAP.

imap.mail.att.net

Port 993, SSL

smtp.mail.att.net

requires authentication & require Secure Password Authentication

Port 465, SSL

Also- I do have an area to create new folders in my webmail  "+ New Folder"   (using 'mail.yahoo.com)

I added test folders to Outlook and Webmail and both sync'd to the other.  (Outlook required a restart to force it but they both did cross to the other.

In post 6 you said:

I read that as you have subfolders of inbox, i.e., inbox is the parent folder in the webmail.  That's what I am questioning.  Or are you miss-using the term "subfolder"?

Also- I do have an area to create new folders in my webmail  "+ New Folder"   (using 'mail.yahoo.com)

Yes, but not as a subfolder of inbox.  User created folders are in their own section below that "+  New Folder" line.

I added test folders to Outlook and Webmail and both sync'd to the other.  (Outlook required a restart to force it but they both did cross to the other.

Again, yes, I would expect the server to sync with a IMAP configured client, but still not as a subfolder of inbox.

Sorry for the confusion and thanks for clarification.    I interpreted the top area of webmail as 'frequent' or 'popular' items and everything below being the full inbox, including subfolders.

Below is what I have on webmail and Outlook.  There are 3 that don't match.  Archive, Spam, and Bulk Mail.  Bulk mail on Webmail was coming to spam for a while but that stopped.
