International student asking for help to address overdue bills issue

I'm an international student who had made an AT&T account at the local center in late August last year for the plan. The day I created my account and was going through the confirmation process, I was required to set and re-enter a four-digit password. However, I might have pressed the wrong number while setting it up, as I kept encountering errors during the verification process. Consequently, the staff member assisting me with the account setup had to cancel the initial account and create a new one. Since that day, my plan was activated, and I used it for several months before switching to a different company's plan and terminating my AT&T service. I never missed a payment during this period.

However, I later learned through an email that the account created on the first day, which was supposed to have been canceled due to the password error and which I never used or even knew the account number of, was not canceled due to staff error. As a result, I was being billed for both this virtual account and my actual account since that day. When I called the local center staff, they admitted their mistake in charging the virtual account but said they did not have access to resolve the issue and advised me to visit a larger center to explain the situation and request the cancellation of the virtual account. As it was the midterm period, the stress of having to travel to a distant location to request the cancellation of the wrongfully charged account was overwhelming, so I considered just paying the bill for the virtual account. However, I could not do so since I did not even know the account number. After the semester ended, I took a semester off and returned to my home country.

I initially intended to address this issue upon my return to the US this fall by going to an AT&T center to terminate the virtual account. Nonetheless, it occurred to me that AT&T might have already closed the account and forwarded it to a collection agency. Currently being in my home country limits the ways I can contact AT&T, so I am seeking guidance on how to resolve this matter.
