Difference in speed over a short distance

I am buying a property. The property is one of about 40 others in a small area, with less than a mile from the first to last property. All the properties have AT&T Internet. The first 15 or so properties have 10Mb internet, but the remaining 25 have less than 768Kbps.

How is there such a huge difference in speed in such a short area over the same copper wire?

We are here to help, @bingohandjob.

Here is more information about AT&T internet in your neighborhood and what affects it.

Distance plays a huge part in what plan people can get for the AT&T internet. It could just be they are to far away from where the equipment is placed or that our service is just not available at all.

Let us know if this helps.

Marc, seems you have misunderstood my question, as all the properties I mentioned have AT&T internet. Can you please re-read it and advise accordingly.

We are here to help, @bingohandjob.

We recommend that you use our Troubleshoot and Resolve Tool. This will help troubleshoot the low speeds in your neighborhood. It will test for any line failures, and tell you if you need a technician to come and look at everything.

Let us know if this helps.

Marc, I don't wish to be rude, but again you have either misunderstood my question or not read it. Please could you read the original question, thank you.

@bingohandjob

If we're misunderstanding your message and your complaint is about speed availability and not speed performance, please let us know.

Like Marc mentioned earlier, the difference in speed availability between the houses could be due to some being closer to where our equipment is placed.

However, there could be a different reason for the speed difference, but we'd have no way of knowing without being able to see the area. A field technician would have to survey the area to find the exact reason why.

You can use the link Marc provided that discussed Fiber availability if you'd like to try to have the speeds increased across the area. The section titled

Looking for Fiber for your Neighborhood or Building? is where you'll want to begin.

We'll be here if you need further assistance.
