No wall jack

Hi everyone!

This is the first time I've posted here but I received my u-verse package in the mail the other day and realized I couldn't self-install because I have no phone jack. I have a coaxial cable but no phone jack.

I ended up booking an appointment with a technician for this upcoming Monday and was told to get permission from the apartment building to install a wall jack. However, the building doesn't want me to install a wall jack. They've suggested I either use the coaxial cable or consider other service options.

I tried calling at&t to convey this information and was told they weren't sure if the technician would be able to do the installation at all. They suggested one option was I cancel the tech visit since they weren't sure the tech would be able to do anything.

I'm not tech savvy but has anyone dealt with this before? Any recommendations?

If you received the equipment direct shipped, that means according to ATT records service has existed at the address before.

Did you receive a GREEN or RED cable, GREEN would be phone jack while RED would be looking for an ONT. What internet speed are you subscribed to?

If a jack previously existed and owner / management remodeled with  removing the jack will be $99 charge to install a new jack. Wire requiring wiring and drilling, you have to have permission (be responsible for) both per the Terms Of Service (TOS) agreement. Any issues, your responsible for making it right with the owner. See section 7c in link below.

It is a green cable, needing a phone jack.

The building seems to have remodeled recently so if there was one, it's no longer there.

I guess what I'm wondering is - if a new jack can't be installed, is it at all possible to still get service or would it be better to cancel altogether? Are there any adapters or anything that can be used or is it a lost cause?

Installing a wall jack is about a 15 minute job, with no noticeable difference to the wall. They drilled a very little hole in the outside wall ran the telephone wire from outside into my apt. I didn't even think to ask the apt complex permission, for such a minor job or u-verse guy never mentioned it. A lot of apt. complexes think installing a jack means a big project, but it isn't. Good luck to you.

Your apartment complex may have an agreement with the cable company to allow only their service (reference this article).  There are limits to which telecommunication services they can legally block; but practically they can make your life hard.

Likely there is a place where you used to have a telephone outlet box.  It could be a wall jack in the Kitchen (depending on the age of your apartment).

The box is probably still there, but perhaps covered in wallpaper or sheetrock tape.  You could probably locate it by tapping on the wall in the likely spots where it should be (about 12 inches from the floor, often on the other side of a stud from a power outlet).  If you located it, then you can decide if you want to push forward.
